Croton of unknown species, pruning help

Hello. I have what started out as a small, indoor croton that had been left behind by a previous tenant. Now it is getting taller and starting to tip. I turn it here and there, but it still tips. It is about two feet high and has no branches, just one 'trunk' and a bunch of leaves.

I have read that it should be pruned to thin out the branches and prevent top-heaviness. Um, there are no branches!

It is an awesome little guy. Its leaves look like a cross between a moon and stars melon and a zucchini. Well, if they had been under a steam roller! The top foliage comes out dark green with yellow spots. It then ages to orange and then to red and dark red. So, the top is always yellow and it rainbows down to dark red at the bottom of the plant.

Any ideas on how to prune the branches off a plant that has no branches? I'd love to know if I should just selectively remove some leaves or if I should pinch the new top growth to encourage branching.

Thank you in advance!!

J.
