an unknown poor looking plant

I don't know what this could be. A bush? A tree? Poor form? The leaves have been severely eaten. Right behind it is a wild black cherry coming back from a cut trunk, and it will be removed.

What is this plant? If it worthwhile to save, can I rejuvenate it by cutting it nearly to the ground? The form now is quite poor, I think.

This is the larger view of it. (Ignore the black cherry foliage behind.)

This is a closer view of the best leaves I could find.

Can you identify it? Is it a worthwhile keeper? If so, should it be rejuvenated by some hard pruning? And any idea what has eaten the leaves so badly? Immediately nearby the black cherry leaves were not eaten. Strange.

Thanks a lot.

ps Can you tell yet that I've been wanting to post pictures here for a long time? :-) This is wonderful. Finally.
