frustrated with slow growing persimmons

I know persimmons have the reputation of being slow to establish and mature, but there has to be something wrong with mine!

Last bareroot season I planted a Hachiya and a Saijo. They both got full sun and plenty of water.(but good drainage) They each grew maybe 6-8 inches during the spring and then abruptly stopped at the end of April. I continued to deep soak every week but that was it. I originally planted them with plenty of compostamended soil but no special fertilizer. Should I have watered more than that? Added more fertilizer?

At the rate they've been growing, it looks as if there may be a repeat of last year's slow growth performance. It will take another decade before I get any persimmons out of them unless there's a way to speed things up a bit. Help!
