What is the Light Control? How do you know if you have female or male flowers?
I have two Poinsetta's from Christmas 2010 and would like to keep them for a few years.
Any advice?

Light Controll is Were You put Your Point away for 14 hours of Darkness a Night for 8 weeks...

The poinsettia is a photoperiodic plant, meaning that it sets bud and produces flowers as the Autumn nights lengthen. Poinsettias will naturally come into bloom during November or December, depending on the flowering response time of the individual cultivar. Timing to produce blooms for the Christmas holiday can be difficult outside of the controlled environment of a greenhouse. Stray light of any kind, such as from a street light or household lamps, could delay or entirely halt the re-flowering process.

Starting October 1, the plants must be kept in complete darkness for 14 continuous hours each night. Accomplish this by moving the plants to a totally dark room, or by covering them overnight with a large box. During October, November and early December, poinsettias require 6 - 8 hours of bright sunlight daily, with night temperatures between 60 - 70� F. Temperatures outside of this range could also delay flowering.

Continue the normal watering and fertilizer program. Carefully following this regime for 8 to 10 weeks should result in a colorful display of blooms for the holiday season!

I love poinsettia's and would love to see them bloom again before the fall.
But I should not expect to see any blooms until the fall? Should I try to move into a dark room for 14 hours a day for 8 weeks before August or September?
What fertilization program do you recommend?
How do I pollunate it?

I cut mine back to half. Got to post a photo soon. She's already starting to push new leaves.

Look for flowers that have pollen, that is the male part of the plant. take a cat's whisker and rub it on the pollen then transfer it to the female part that has three spokes, I fertilize all of my
Euphorbia in this manner, and by the way the plant is not toxix, don't eat it, but the sap will not cause itching, rash, stinging of eyes, that doesn't mean you shouldn't wash your hands off after you get sap on your hands, but best thing to use is baby oil to remove this sap. Norma

Yikes, you really did cut that back, ninecrow! I'd say I cut mine about 1/2 way, like tommyr. It's pushing a lot of new growth, but maybe I should've been more bold!

When I left His shoots were only a couple of Inches tall....
His Leaves are Large and Lush....

I learned more here than anywhere else about these plants. Soon I will try this with my own that is about 3 feet high and 5 years old. It has never been cut back or forced to bloom. Vacation time is over for mine.

just saw some poinsettias at my local grocery today.
In spite of the fact that all the made in China Christmas ornaments and crap are out already, this is the first of real poinsettias I've seen.

Hello everyone of those lucky ones with pictures of 2011 Poinsettias -- I have tried over the years-living in NE -did have some in our yard when living in FL--that was really neat--they grew like weeds
Now back in NE and fairly new to this forum I will buy one soon and follow all your suggestions-hopefully being able to post a picture next year--Enjoy all your successes

What's the secret caring for Poinsettias. It's been years since I bought one, but this year Walmart had variegated leaves so I couldn't resist.

I didn't notice until yesterday, the container it's in doesn't have drainage.

Why and when does it need pruning and how much should be removed?
What type of light? Can it be summered outdoors?

I know they're cold sensitive, so it'd have to live in the LR which is warmer, but air is a little dry. Do they need lots of humidity?

The bottom of the pot has no drain holes??? It must! Is there a saucer attached to the bottom? It should pull off.

Around March or so when it starts looking a bit worse for the wear you can prune it back to half. Keep moist but not soggy. New leaves will form in a few weeks. At that point you can pick up with some fertilizer. Yes, you can put it outdoors after all danger of frost is gone. Bright, indirect Sun.
