fruitnut, that rundown was actually very helpful. That was a concern of mine, if it would grow new ones from the top of the 'trunk' or if it would keep expanding on its last years wood. Tart cherry - I hear they're *slightly* more hardy than the sweet. My citrus is already incredibly finicky, so I'm hoping the experience there can help me out. From what I understand they're prone to mildew, but I've gotta look into it some more. And thanks for the Double A recommendation, I found a few varieties that are well suited as table grapes to the bitter zone 3 climate and winters. Can you tell me how large/old they are when I would get them? I can't imagine they'd produce yet this year, but would I get grapes next year? It might say on the website, I'm on mobile so I may have missed it. They're very affordable, too! I'm leaning towards the St. Croix variety. Edit to add: the wealth of information on their "Learn" area is astounding! There's a whole power point like thing about pruning from just a cutting through the third or fourth growing season. andrea: If you are in zone 5, you could satisfy the dormancy by putting the plant outside or in an unheated garage for a couple of months. I would think the best time outside would fall. Set it out several weeks before your ave first frost. Leave it until the leaves have fallen. Then back inside before a really hard freeze. I won't put it outside in mid winter because that would be too cold esp if it hasn't hardened off. In an unheated garage the best time might be mid winter. You just want enough cold to knock the leaves off. This should get the needed rest period. I think your plant will grow inside just don't expect much fruit. Regardless of how bright it is in your room, it is not likely to be enough light for much of a crop. But you don't have much to lose so why not try. The Fruitnut

Drew, I appreciate your advice. It's interesting that you bring up the calcined DE, as I was just looking through past threads regarding it's usage. I've actually seen a lot of your old posts on the topic. I know I can get Optisorb and Napa 8822 here, but I don't have access to a Carquest. I'm a little concerned with the occasional reports of it not holding up with time, but if I can find some that would hold up, it seems like it may be the way to go, due to it's larger water holding capacity. I see that you are also recommending trying to grow most of these plants in the native soil (but not blueberries). I am kind of surprised that it has been suggested as much as it has, since it seems to contradict popular opinion on the topic. I'd love to give it a go with the blackberries and raspberries, and I was already planning on it with the grapes. I just don't want to end up with malnourished, or under performing plants. I would have thought, that since my strawberries were exhibiting iron chlorosis, that the blackberries and raspberries were likely to do the same, due to similar PH preferences. Do you think that I may have come to a false conclusion here? The raised bed idea wasn't something I had considered, but that may actually be my favorite suggestion so far. It would allow the plants more room to grow, while also allowing me to provide them with an optimal medium. I would think a raised bed would also need less water than a container, due to the larger volume. I don't know much about growing in raised beds, as it's not something I had considered in depth before. What kind of mix would you recommend in that scenario? Does a typical container mix, like the 5-1-1, perform well in raised bed, or would something different be preferred? And by the way, those are some nice looking plants. I would be very happy if I could get to that point.
