Hi guys..It's been a while since being here, but to those of you who know me, HI..Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/holiday and New Years..

Anyway, I've a few questions..One...does anyone know how long it'd take to germinate Ficus/Rubber Tree and Epiphyllum seeds?

2. Anyone know how many types of variegated Ficus Elastica/Rubber Trees there are in the world?

I'm actually asking these questions for a friend; she's interested in sowing.

Thanks so much..and again, I hope everyone is fine. It's quite cold here in IL, 2F degrees..Thank God for plants. I've been Superthriving different groups that are now growing leaves/flowers, like Citrus, African Violets, Hibiscus, Sans and Jasmines.

Hi Toni!

I have never tried epi seeds, but I tried ficus elastica seeds once. I had two or three yogurt cups of them and, after six months, I still had not sprouts. I finally gave up, tossed them and bought a few plants. That was a couple of years ago when I first got into houseplants. I have read that it can take several months for ficus elastica seeds to germinate.

Hi Amany...LOL, that's incouraging..So, you suggest she buys the plants and forget sowing?
I was thinking of sowing Ficus Religiosa seeds, since I want the plant, but don't want to spend a fortune. Waiting isn't a problem..not much to do in Il now anyway, considering it's -0..Thanks..Toni

Question 1. Dead heading a flowering plant all depends on the plant. As debndal stated removing spent flowers only if you don't want seeds from the plant or don't dead head annuals so they can reseed. Dead heading something like a geranium you would cut it all the way back to the stem that the flower is growing on. Something like sweet williams (Dianthus barbatus) you can sit there and dead head each spent flower or you can shear it back with scissors which is easier and faster. If it is a lily only cut off the flower head and leave the stem because this is what the plant gets energy from for next years growth. Then there are some plant I just let the flower fall off the plant, like rose of sharons. As you can see there are many ways to dead head so if you need know how to dead head a certain plant you'd have to ask how to dead head it. Question 2. Debndal answered this one Question 3. I'm with debndal I didn't know HD had online orders but think I'd prefer going to a nursery. Question 4. I agree beans are very easy and fast. My grand son had a project he was doing in kindergarten with beans I showed him that planting one of the beans it would grow. Everyday when he came home he'd look to see if the bean had sprouted and on the day that it came up he was delighted and though mamaw was magic LOL. BTW, No question is silly as was stated we all went through asking questions.

I do believe you, and I do believe her, but I don't understand the cutout number. How can 23.5 fit in a 23.375 space? The cabinets I'm buying say the box is built with a 5/8" thickness...this could be thicker than 1/2" in something like a Kraftmaid cabinet. I would so like to reconcile the calculation! Lovely thought on the drawers. I actually did have drawers first there, but changed the rollouts thinking that they gave just a bit more vertical space with no horizontal framing having to cross the space. But I agree it's less effort to open a drawer. Regardless, I like the look of the 26" oven depth to break up the line, so will likely switch to drawers and deepen.

I have two Kindle Paperwhites with WiFi and cellular connectivity. Hubs has one with Wifi and cellular, and one with only WiFi. Unfortunately, as has been pointed out, above, the cellular connectivity on new devices is now only available on the Kindle Oasis. The Oasis is significantly more expensive ($250) than the "regular" Paperwhite ($140). Yes, @aok27502, you can download the free Kindle app on many devices -- I have it on my desktop computer (running Windows 10), as well as on my iPad Air and iPhone. But, a big advantage to reading on an actual Kindle device is the absence of glare on the screen. The built-in front lighting is great for reading in a dark room (e.g., in bed while your spouse is trying to sleep). And Kindles are very light weight. @Suzieque you might be able to find an earlier generation Paperwhite with WiFi and cellular on Amazon.

MUA should really be provided mechanically, not through “drafty” walls, crawl spaces or attics. The hood you are purchasing should provide you with the volume of MUA that is required to run the system efficiently, assuming it is correctly sized with your gas range. Your log stove should have its own MUA system, but if you are relying on the hood system, it needs to be sized to accommodate both the log stove AND your gas range. The International Building Code for Residential Construction should provide all of the details you need (in the mechanical code) for this system - even if your local jurisdiction or contractors are not familiar with it.

Yup!

I definitely suggest she just buy one. Sometimes you just need instant gratification. LOL I see nice sized ficus elastica all the time at Home Depot and Lowes for $9 - 12. They look to be in pots that are slightly bigger than a gallon. If your friend wants to start small, I see them in 4 inch pots all the time for about $3.

Toni, I've sown epie seeds twice now (same batch) about 2 years apart. I was really surprised that the seeds were still viable the second time around. It doesn't take them long to sprout, but they are such tiny tender little things I suggest using a no soil mix. I think the 1st time I used vermiculite and the second time I just used a seed starting mix. I sowed them in small styrofoam coffee cups and put another clear cup over top of them to act as a mini greenhouse. The first time I kept them in a north facing window and the second time on a north facing porch, NO direct sun. They are very, very slow growing. I started fertilizing (weak solution) mine after they were a few weeks old. These are succulents ('jungle' cactus) so be careful they don't dry out completely, but also don't keep them too soggy wet. Just moist. I watered from the bottom and lightly dripped some water off my finger tips on top of the soil until they got some size to them.

Both sowings (3yrs and 1yr) are still alive and well, but not blooming size yet.
