Help identifying a plum tree variety

Hi all,

I grew up in Jacksonville, NC, about 30 minutes from the coast. We had this plum tree that was split in half by a pine tree during a storm about ten years ago. The plums started off as little green plums, then turned red and then to a deep purple when ripe. The flesh was similar in going from green, to yellowish (when red) and on to a reddish-purple when ripe. When the fruit was red, the plums were sour, but when ripe they were sweet, juicy plums. The tree was planted sometime during the seventies.

There was only one plum tree in the yard. Many different plants, flowers and pine trees were around. About four houses down, I think there was another plum tree that produced the green/yellow types plumbs with yellow flesh. So, not sure if the tree in my yard was a self pollinator or if the other tree was helping.

Thanks, mas
