Ok everyone! What's blooming for you this month?

I thought we could all get off to a good start here today, this New Year's Day and share our photos of plants in bloom this month!
It's the dead of winter and God knows we could all use some cheering up. Pictures taken today except for one citrus.

I thought I would start and please share. The excitement runs much deeper here than my local area.

Orchids....Many to my surprise from one I saved last winter from an Orchid show and nurseries about to either toss them or rid them of half price. ALL are VERY fragrant.

Those orchids are beautiful! Is the citrus tree a Meyer lemon? I received some ML seeds in trade and they have now started to germinate. Hope they look like yours some day. The scents there must be awesome!

I love the orchids! The fifth one down is my favorite. I am sure that the fragrance from the citrus and gardenia are heavenly, especially on a cold, wintery day.

Blutarski, that's odd. The reason I say it's odd is, IL's planting time used to be April 15th. Sometime in the last 10 years, they changed planting dates from Apr 15th to May 15th. A whole month later. I like your time better. LOL Green there was Snow in July??? Wow, that must have ruined the 4th of July party. What do you mean, the bottom dropped out? You set out Epicias? That's scary. They dote on warmth. How are they doing? When I think of LA, heat and humidity come to mind. You guys grow citrus and palsm year round. Lucky you. Chandres. Has spring arrived in VA? I would think VA has much shorter winters than we do, yes/no? When electric goes, nothing works. I bought an old-fashioned phone w/cord so we have phone service when electric goes. No tv, computer, lights, HEAT, (have to worry about birds) oven and stove. Burners can be lit w/a match, but it's a pain. Did you mean to say, you're in the country, your mom's in the city? You have service when she doesn't? Living in the city, you'd think it worked the other way around?? Josh, which state are you in? If you don't mind me asking. Zones 7/8 is pretty warm, short winters, long summers. Even though it's been cold here, Snow Crocus, Tulips and Hyacinth have sprouted. Several years ago I planted an Alum, think that's its name, that does great in cold, but as soon as temps heat up, (over 75) that poor plant goes dormant, but resprouts in last autumn, when temps cool. I'd love seeing it grow its full height plus flower. Since we've had it, it's never once flowerd, but leaves are so pretty. Variegated. It's not as warm as yesterday, even cooler tomorrow. According to the WC, it's going to drop a few degrees each day, then back to 70's Monday. I set two plants out front. Geraniums and tree Gardenia. I'm considering setting out a Key Lime, too. It depends on temps...if they don't drop under 40-45, all 3 will stay out 24/7. Thanks, and Happy Spring!!! Toni

I have to agree with diggerdeb, First Prize has the biggest blooms I have seen and big thorns too. In my garden the huge blooms are Medallion, Chrysler Imperial, Chicago Peace, Oldtimer and Sultry. My mum has Just Joey and it is huge also in her garden Royal Highness is very large too. I just planted a Royal Highness mine is new so it wil take a few years to see large blooms. Carrie

Try to find some Swamp Sunflowers (Narrow Leaf Sunflower) for a showy 2-3 weeks at the end of September. They grow very tall if not cut back in July (prior to buds setting). They look like a very tall yellow daisy or Black Eyed Susan. They don't have the huge center of a classic Sunflower. I trim mine to about 2 feet off the ground in July to keep them from growing to 8-10 feet in height. They end up a gorgeous 5 foot bouquet. The more sun you give it, the more blooms you will get. I grew them alongside the house in Charlotte with no problems in well drained soil. However, they can also handle boggy soil. If in Charleston, pick up a Christmas Senna, Winter Cassia Senna. Gorgeous orchid-like flowers which bloom in November. Your last blooms are during Thanksgiving. The plant dies back in winter but will return. They are found easily in Charleston but I may have had the only ones in Charlotte.

Hey Josh That tree has made a great recovery from all that has happened to it! It's loking very nioce and I can see the blooms. It's beautiful, and even without the blooms or fruit, it is still a remarkable looking colorful tree. I love it! I can also see, is that the Moro tree? It's shape is to die for. You did have a vision for that one and boy does it show. Wow, and I was scared to cut mine back like you do. By the way, if I was a plant sitting there in that spot, you bet I'd be happy. Look how bright it is. Is that where you place or orchid too? It's getting frigid here! Time to make sure the spider mites aren't looking for a place to dwell since they hate 0 degrees with winds in excess of 40 miles per hour. Hmm, I wonder if there are any mites trying to hunker down on my juicy plants?lol There is always that...What if, when you have over 300 plants.lol Mike

Orchids can be quite addicting, especially if they fill the air with sweetness in the middle of winter.

Yes Marric, the first one down is a Lemon Meyer always in bloom. I love this one.
The best way to get flowers and fruit in a quick amount of time is to buy them as cuttings from mature trees or as grafted.

Here is another Orchid I wanted to share that is also in bloom now:-)
This one has the deep rich chocolate fragrance. Love it.

As usual when brought inside, it's defoliated but the weird little bloom stalks at the nodes have formed. Can't tell if they will complete their mission...

I have a lipstick plant, crown of thorns, african violets, phal and den orchids, thanksgiving cactus, white flowering maple and several begonias flowering right now. Might get some pics in a bit.

TJ...I have never had luck with poinsettias. You did a wonderful job with yours!

EL.. That's a lovely color bloom on you AV. Such a deep pink!

Josh..is that the CC that you did the repot on? It certainly likes that window. I can't wait to see how my CC blooms this year.

Purple, I have to admit that I recently acquired that violet. DH said, do you really need another plant? Nonplant people!

That's the CC that I re-potted a bit late in the season. Took the transition quite well, I'd say.

Ludisia (terrestial orchid) is blooming now, there are 12 spikes, either bud or fully open (leaves visible behind the flower spike are phal).

Mike - your plants are beautiful. So many beautiful orchids, and the citrus, gardenia...simply gorgeous.

tj - your poinsettias look so lush; and the white(cream?) one is so huge! You are doing something right.

elkay - rich color on you violet; what other colors are blooming for you now?

Laura - just like tiny rosebuds...love the color & blooms. I am not successful with AF's.

Josh - great looking CC, looks like you'll have so many more flowers.

Oh, and that African Violet Laura, that kind I would buy in a heart beat! So different and beautiful color.

Josh, I am in love with that C.C and you know why! I should get a pick of the two I have now that my camera is working. So nice and I love it when the flowers open in a space of different times and not all at once. They last so much longer that way. That is how my gardenia flowers open.

Purple, no Pics? Come on..:-) By the way, I heard you are cold down there too.

Elkay..How in the world do you do such a good job with all your plants?

Ninecrow..Congrats. It is almost impossible to get three points at once. I have yet to do that.

Tj...How in the world did you get them to be that big and to FLOWER? Nice job!

Ludisia is really easy to grow and it has very nice velvet-like leaves.
I have 4 pieces, that broke off last summer, in water (!) and even they have flowers now...

Hi Rina. I noticed you are from Ontario too. Where did you get your Ludisia (terrestial orchid)? I love the foliage and the flowers are beautiful!

I bought Ludisia at Sheridan probably 6-7 yrs. ago, it was just 1 stem.

I have those rooted cuttings you can see in last photo I posted - when they finish blooming I can send you some...
