What to do with newly planted fruit trees in clay

I am a new member to the garden forum. Last year I moved out of the mountains at 7,500 ft to the Front Range (5,000 ft) and am so happy to live in a climate where I can garden! I went a little crazy last year planting 10 new fruit trees. Our soil is clay and I had no prior experience with clay. I dug the hole and amended it as best I could with pea gravel and a good soil/compost mix. However I did not plant the trees in an elevated mound. I planted them at the same level as the ground. I have already lost one tree to water log and don't want to lose any more. All the other trees seem to be doing OK - starting to bud out, but I was told by a resident garden expert that I should dig up all my trees and elevate them in a mound because they will never thrive the way I have them planted and that it is just a matter of time before they will die. So my question is do I dig up and disrupt trees that look good and healthy or should I leave them and hope for the best?
