squirrel damage of apple tree

hey all,

I recently planted a pair of apple trees in my backyard in brooklyn. One of them, a really health espalier Gala, appears th have been chewed on one of the upright branches. The branch is about the width of my thumb, and the wound, where the bark is completely stripped away, is about the size of a dime.

I've heard it's best to let the tree heal itself naturally, but is there anything I can do to help it? Would it help to neaten up the edges of the wound with an exacto knife? Is there any wound paint or salve that speeds healing?

And most importantly, how do I keep the squirrels from eating the tree? I loosely wrapped the bases of both in window screen material, but I have no idea if that will help.

thanks!

Matt
