Cold weather brings out the color!

Usually this planter doesn't look that great until around Easter when the light gets stronger and longer, but I was noticing yesterday just how bright the colors are.

The cold is causing the orchids to bud, also. I should have nice flowers just in time for Christmas!

Those are really beautiful! I'd said I'd start to envy your climate around the end of January, but I think I'll start right after Christmas ;)

Typically our fall colors are governed by cold weather during the first two weeks of October, which is when fall foliage appears and peaks. If we do not get frost during that time, sugar maple leaf colors do not progress much past the golden/orange colors into the brilliant reds. With recent warmer temperatures extending well into November and December, our fall foliage hasn't been what it used to be these past few years. Climate change at work. I don't believe there is any correlation between cold or snow in spring and when leaves change color and fall off the trees in the fall. Strong winds in October, of course, will blow many of the colorful leaves off the trees before their time, resulting in a shortened foliage season. Most gardeners here in New England plant hardy flowers, or else prepare to cover up, or bring more tender annuals into their garages, sheds, or houses, if an unexpected frost comes. Tough flowers like daffodils or snowdrops will bloom in the snow, while other perennials do not rear their heads until warmer weather appears. Still there is always the possibility of weather damage to trees and shrubs from storms bringing winds and heavy wet snow breaking branches of shrubs and trees from the weight. A good snow cover on the ground all winter is a protective insulator for plants and trees, and again, these past mostly snowless winters have been hard on some of our growing things, In the early spring, cold nights are necessary for the sap to run, but maple sugaring is whole other issue. I hope if you do visit my state, you luck into a great foliage season. It is something to see! It might just convince you to move here, so welcome if you do! I, on the other hand, have never been to the west coast, and I hope to someday. The farthest west I have ever been was Phoenix, Arizona. A lot of natural beauty there too, very different from New England!

Dave- I learned that humidity has a great effect when combined with heat. A few weeks ago we warmed up and the flowers were nice. Then a batch of humid air came in from the south which is rare in Calif. My reds and dark pinks got so rich in color for a week. Then the sea breeze sent the humid air back to Arizona, and my colors lightened considerably. Even though the heat was about the same, the change of humidity caused considerable color change. I agree with ucovinero about leaving them out until frost. Here in Maine , after our first few frosts we get a frost free period of a couple of weeks. Any night where frost is predicted I bring all the pots into the garage over night and then put them back outside in the morning. I continue this until i get tired of hauling them ( usually over a hundred pots) and then bring into the house those I want to overwinter and those I just want to finish ripening ( these can get by on little light while they finish up and are scattered all over the house) john

@rosecanadian it is a climber rose and AARS winner. Rupp, first time I got exquisite color slightly lighter than Americana but bloom shape is undoubtedly exquisite. It germinated this April mid. Already it has suckered suggesting me to be anything now. Initially I thought it a floribunda but you did not notice it's long neck. It is more than half of entire branch length.

Oh, Cena, that succulent dish is stunning! Rich colors that bring to mind a beautiful sun. What is the name of the yellow succ with red margins, kinda in the middle of the pot? It's a real looker!

oooh I almost got one of the tall woody ones yesterday, It sure is a beauty :) Love the orchids, can't wait to see blooms.

Well, thank you!

Do you mean the one with thick red margins, or the one with thin red margins? Since they both seem to be near the center.

At 12 o'clock we have Aeonium hawarthia 'Pin Wheels'. Thin red margins.

One o'clock a plant we ID'd tentatively, but I would have to look for the id. The bell like blooms have a blue edge, a most spectacular plant!

2 & 3 are Sempervivens of some kind.

4, 4:30 is a Graptoveria of some type, perhaps a Graptopetalum.

The center plant is Echeveria 'Red Edge', a fine specimen. This one is about 4 years, maybe 5 in this pot. Thick red margins.

The next at 6 straight down is Sempervivens arachnoidea (?sp)

And the 10 o'clock position is Crassula 'Morgans Pink' as far as I know. It blooms about 3 times a year, and no, I have no conclusive ID to say it is MP.

There are a couple of crassulas tucked up under, but they hardly can be seen.

oooh! i have a weakness for semps! i left all of mine with my mom when i moved to AZ--figured they'd be happier there.

is that orchid a cymbidium, cena? i fished one out of the trash at Trader Joe's--it was fine, just the bloom stalk was broken off and they figured they couldn't sell it, i guess. i read they like to have a cold spell so i left it outside this "winter."

Yep, cymbs do really well here. Its been getting down to 50* at night, and all of the larger ones are sending out bloom stalks. Since there are so many flowers on the stalk, this is another one that wants regular fert through out the year to preform when scheduled. Since I've got two out of five popping guess I managed that somewhat.

Well, my C. 'Pinkie' must be on strike this year. Shoot, I was really looking forward to seeing some flowers from it again this year. I'm jealous, also, of your success with succulents, they dislike my terrerium conditions about as much as the begonias like it.
