Fertilizer questions for longan, almond, & pomegranate tree?
Comments (3)While air temps are between 60-80, I usually fertilize at 4 tsp in a 2-1/2 gallon watering can, which is about 1-1/2 tsp per gallon, and I see no evidence of plants having trouble keeping leaf margins & tips hydrated (no sign of fertilizer burn), or any sort of sense that the plants are being pushed too hard, so I think 1 tsp/gallon on a weekly basis is well within reason ..... if you are watering copiously so the soil is being flushed at each watering. If you want to controll them, look up ants natural predators, and encourage them in your yard. That definitely makes sense. flora_uk, the link you included about ants & peonies seems to be broken or something. calistoga wrote: neptune24 it is really hard to respond to your post when you give no clue as to where you are gardening. What is your zone? I'm in 7B, GA. Ants live in the ground and are a part of nature, I leave alone unless I can see they are a problem to what ever I am growing. If your tree has scale or aphids the ants may be contributing to their spread by moving them around. Ants are easily controlled with a boric acid bait. Al Thanks. Comments (9)Southern California is an excellent climate for pomegranates, and the tree should thrive. Just make sure it gets some water in the Summer. A pomegranate tree makes an excellent addition to the yard and are very ornamental, with their big orange blossoms and big decorative fruits. It's too bad more people can't appreciate eating pomegranate. The CRFG fact sheet on pomegranate even says: "Consumer demand in this country is not great. More pomegranate fruits probably wind up as decorations in fruit bowls than are consumed." Pomegranate makes excellent juice though, but it's only at its best when it's fresh, not the stuff sold at the supermarket. For best quality juice, the inside arils need to be first separated from the sour white rind and then pressed....See MorePomegranate Tree Beginner Questions
Comments (5)"...until growth activity resumes or continues." (from above). I'm not familiar with the water requirements of pomegranate. In general, probe the soil 4 to 5" down, and if dry, apply water. You can also become familiar with the weight of the watered plant, and when the pot is lifted or tipped up, it will seem much lighter when dry. In many cases, if water is applied quickly to a potted plant, most of the water runs down the insides of the pot. Unless the root ball was really loose, water needs to be applied slowly right at the trunk, and allowed to seep in. A sprinkler would be one way of watering slowly. If your tree doesn't wilt or drop leaves at all, it can go back out in the sun, give it a week first to see how it reacts to the transplant....See Morechervil2
