Pomegranate Tree Beginner Questions

Hi everyone,

I just happened to pick up a pomegranate tree on a whim the other day at Home Depot and upon doing a few days of research I realized that I may be in a bit over my head. I just have a few questions, any information given is greatly appreciated!

Important Info: I live in Orlando, FL and plan to keep the tree potted - I have already purchased a 10 gallon smart pot.

First, I don't know how old the tree is, but I'm assuming it's rather young - it's about 3 feet tall and very thin. I'm not sure if I should re-pot it now or when it's a little stronger. Currently it's in a small, plastic container - would it be smart to immediately plant it into the 10 gallon smart pot or should I wait and let it grow some more as is?

Second, The potting soil I bought is organic, but does not contain perlite which is something I know nothing about but just happened to see on a few websites. Is that something I should mix into the soil when I re-pot it?

Third, when should I fertilize and with what type of fertilizer. I read May and November, with slow release fertilizer but I don't know if Orlando's climate would change that at all..?

Fourth, I've seen some varying information regarding watering. Some say to keep the soil moist, while others say to water thoroughly once a week, does this depend on whether it's mature or in the ground?

Finally, I know it's young and not a great picture, but would anyone know what variety it is?

Again, any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Is this a fruiting or an ornamental pomegranate? The tag should give some indication. A tree that large will already have roots touching the pot and the black pot should not be isolated out in full sun. Transplant soon and keep the plant and pot in shade to part sun until growth activity resumes or continues.

If possible, dunk the whole rootball in water until major air bubbles cease before settling into new pot, unless the current soil seems damp and heavy.

Other forum members can better advise on new soil/fertilizer.

It's a fruiting tree - I just transplanted it into a 10 gallon pot this morning. How long do you think I should keep it in shade/partial sun until then and how much should I be watering it?

Once a month may be a little light on watering in Arizona though, I'd say at least every other week in general with the weather there in summer. And that should be a deep long soak each time. Fertilizing three to four times during the warm season with a good fruit tree food should be enough. And water right after fertilizing always. And that amount of pruning should not be an issue, sounds like you did it right. Now with that being said; This is just a hunch on my part but is this by chance a dwarf pome shrub? And are the fruits on the small size, like a large ping pong ball? Did you plant it or did it come with the house? I ask because there is an ornamental dwarf pomegranate that has fruit like that. It has beautiful flowers, but the fruit is small with clear arils and no flavor. And yes the rind is tough and dry. If that's the case, nothing to do, just enjoy the flowers and plant a named variety pomegranate fruit tree.

I wouldn't fret about it too much. After a week or two, cut the watering to 2x per week.

I haven't grown pomegranates, but I'd guess it's an issue of ripeness. I'd say that second problem would be that the pomegranate wasn't ripe (or maybe overripe? I don't have experience to say which, but I'd lean towards underripe). I've read that splitting is a sign that they are ripe ... though of course birds and all are going to raid those split fruit, so I believe the splitting is natural, but maybe catch them before they are that split? I bet if those are ripe, those that set at a similar time are just about ready, too, so you could try picking and opening one. It could also be a watering issue, though; I know a lot of fruit develop splits and cracks if watering is uneven.

Your climate needs certain types of poms because of humidity issues.

"...until growth activity resumes or continues." (from above). I'm not familiar with the water requirements of pomegranate. In general, probe the soil 4 to 5" down, and if dry, apply water. You can also become familiar with the weight of the watered plant, and when the pot is lifted or tipped up, it will seem much lighter when dry. In many cases, if water is applied quickly to a potted plant, most of the water runs down the insides of the pot. Unless the root ball was really loose, water needs to be applied slowly right at the trunk, and allowed to seep in. A sprinkler would be one way of watering slowly.

If your tree doesn't wilt or drop leaves at all, it can go back out in the sun, give it a week first to see how it reacts to the transplant.

I got a pom tree and new to pom trees as well.mine is a Russian variety ,living in zone 7b..I put it to the ground directly with some organic soil and cow manure mixed.Once in a month I fertilize it with bone meal blood meal...Its was very small seedling when I got it. its growing now nice leaves... not expecting any fruit for 2 3 years though.. yours looks bigger ..for watering I do every 3 days if it is not raining ,but this time of year we get lots of rain so no watering necessary for me ..good luck... I love eating poms...
