Comments (20)A natural woodland (well maybe with a few more flowers than normal), a prairie, or a marsh...all have lots of charm. Except for mosquitos I think I wouldn't mind any of them as a natural display near my house (I don't want to live in any of them..due to water rotting wood, prairie grass fire, woodland termites/roof dmg). I'm happy to mock-up the actual habitat near the house..with a bit more control due to house concerns. All have their own loveliness and lushness....See MoreGrape growth
Comments (4)The rate of grape growth varies greatly with growing conditions, season length, and variety vigor. With good growing conditions and our long season we can easily get 8-10ft cane extension per year and could push them with water and nitrogen to double that. For average conditions figure 8ft per year and one plant occupying about 8x10 = 80 sq ft....See Moreweird growth on grape vine
Comments (5)That is the grape tumid gall. The insect that causes it is called, not surprisingly, the grape tumid gallmaker. The adult is a type of midge. The larval stage of the midge actually causes the gall. The galls usually form on leaves, but sometimes on stems, petioles and flower clusters. It's generally not a major problem although if the gall forms on a flower cluster you won't get any grapes from that cluster. There usually aren't enough around to be an issue. You can remove the gall if you don't like the way it looks. But since this is essentially an insect that lives on native grapes, it is questionable if removing it or leaving it will have any significant effect on the overall population....See More?'s on grape variety differing growth habits
Comments (1)I can not talk for table grapes but I can tell you that the variance in growth habit between wine grapes is huge. It is like dwarf and seedling for apples. I am looking into this very problem right now as a friend is suggesting we use her land for a 15 tree apple orchard and 70 vines vineyard (to be planted this spring). My solution will probably be to group them in vigor, and build different trellises accordingly. On a related note, anyone know where can I buy large orchard trellis materials? I may espalier the semi-dwarf apple trees as well. In your case, if you have an arbor, it will fill regardless. Once they attain the top of the arbor the habit becomes immaterial, all will spread on top of it. The big vines will encroach, the small vines will be losing some of their allotment. in my kiwi arbor I have a lot of encroachment. you may be helped by the fact that you will have mostly hybrids and labruscas in Vermont, and they all have medium to high vigor. So, esthetically things will be fine....See Morebackyardener
