planting carrots -- the magic of burlap!

Carrots for me have been in the "I will not be defeated" category. I'm on my third round this year, with zero survivors from round one, and two carrots growing from round two. Third round is the charm -- because I used burlap.

I experimented with a bare area, and a burlap area right in the same bed, and the germination and rate of growth in the burlap covered area is MUCH better. It says to take the burlap off once they sprout, but since it is hot and dry I'm leaving it on and it is protecting the seedlings. I plan to take it off when the weather breaks.

Thought this info might be helpful to anyone wanting to plant carrots now (as a couple posters have mentioned) in this hot, dry summer.
