How do I construct a 'permanent' stake for my apple tree?

Hi

I have a Liberty apple on M26 rootstock that I hope to plant in the next few days. I hear that this rootstock has many advantages, but it also has poor anchorage and needs a stake which stays in place for the life of the tree. I have no idea how to do this. What material should I use that won't rot in 5-10 years? Metal? Locust fence post?

How tall should it be?

I'm hoping that someone with plenty of experience will say "that's just the outdated way of doing things and we don't promote it anymore"... Wishful thinking?

By the way, our property can get the occasional wind gust on a blustery day but it's not a notable issue here. The soil is just the average good stuff that's found here in Appalachia.

Thanks,

Shannon
