Thank heaven for rain!

We have not had rain here in Utah since I planted my garden! It is raining today and I am so happy. More rain is forecasted over the next two days. Temps up until this point have been high 90's so my plants are going to be super happy with 80's and rain!

I am also 6a/6b in NE Oklahoma! Many of my plantings are up, but not all. I'm not going to worry about it because I go out there every day and I'll find maybe one or two that have sprouted each time. I think some seed just takes longer to germinate than others, and needs different levels of warmth. I nearly lost a couple because they got too dry so I'd say that's the biggest danger right now. Some of the seed I planted was about 4 years old so it's possible some may not come up at all, although I hope that's not the case! It's kind of exciting when new seedlings are up. There are a lot of things I would never have planted had I not gotten the seed mailed to me by a fellow WSer. I moved a raised bed and the resultant grassless spot on the ground has got me thinking about the Silver Queen corn seed and the Jack'O'Lantern pumpkins that were in a package containing some 47 different seed. I just have a backyard garden and normally I just plant tomatoes, squash and peppers in my raised beds but now that I have all this different seed I am really branching out into other areas of my yard! I think you could still plant the things you listed because they don't need winter stratification. But this is my first year winter sowing so I'm not an expert at it, although I've been starting things under lights and direct sowing for years.

My incense is blooming like crazy. I have 3 big ones now, thanks to reseeding. No caterpillars this year, though, or many butterflies, although I saw my first hummingbird in 2 months around the passionflowers yesterday. Mine get no fertilizer at all, they are just growing in the plain ole soil. The plan is to get them to grow in all the places that trumpet vine was taking over. I'm halfway successful.

Lol- my mood swings change so fast, that I have teeth marks on my tongue from biting it so much! I don't know why I never read up on menopause before, it isn't like I never knew it would hit at some point- I guess I was too busy with the kids, and thinking diapers would never end, to think about menopause-lol- The mood swings are really difficult, I have to admit- and I find that I'm afraid of all of these strange changes, that I wasn't prepared for- it's just all so...different than what I've ever known- my metabolism is even changing- things I could eat before with no trouble at all (chocolate...one of the Top Food Groups- lol) give me either heartburn/fast heartbeat/sugar rush or all of the above- And of course, any oddball changes in periods freaks me out pretty good (as I'm sure it does a lot of women in here) because I see anything out of the norm as a cancer of one sort or another- of course, my cousin telling me all of that certainly didn't help at all- I should have remembered that she has always been the one to 'sound the warning bells' about anything and everything, lol- Thanks so much for answering back, and just....well, going through menopause as well- misery does indeed love company!!! lol~

Barb--you don't know the half of it--LOL! We actually bought our 'new' house 4 years ago, and have been gradually moving for the entire time (well, sorting, tossing, moving, reorganizing....) Unfortunately, there were a few things happen along the way that prevented us from listing as soon as we'd have liked to (health problems, both DH and I; then aunt's health took a turn and I had to assume responsibility for her; then they had our street torn up for the better part of 2 years to replace the water, sewer and gas lines.....for starters). but it all worked out--now we're old enough to retire, the market is rebounding in our area, and we found just the right buyers for our home and the neighborhood. I wish everyone could have the positive experience selling that we did.

You're welcome to some of ours. Today we were forecast the entire average rainfall for month's rain in a single day. Everyone is heartily sick of grey skies and constant rain - it's been going on for weeks and weeks. The ground is already saturated from June which had double the average monthly rainfall. But the leafy greens are enormous and I haven't watered anything, including containers, since March.

I'd gladly take the challenges posed by constant rain over drought conditions and consistent triple digit temps.

Hopefully it will continue right on across the continent to here, within a week. Or else the gulf stream can reverse and pull in rain from Britain, though I think that is a lot less likely.....

New Mexico is getting rain too and it is so very wonderful. Between the intensity of the sun and the dry weather, I was beginning to thing I was going to lose some of my plants. Of course, I still have not got done as much as I hoped before the rain started but it is nice to have a little break from watering.

I'm not sure the people here who are flooded out of their homes would necessarily agree with you.

Both are awful.
