tried growing bing cherries in nj? should i risk it?

I know they are supposed to crack, but am just wondering if anyone has still tried them (Bing cherries)?

Do your cherry varieties crack in NJ? Which ones do you guys have?

Even though they are supposed to crack, my heart is so set on Rainier and Bing-- Do I have any chance at all, or is it completly stupid of me to try?

I read up on Lapins and Sweetheart and Van (googled), but overall people still praise Bing cherries as tasting better. (And I LOVE them!(the cherries)

varieties are recommended in all but the most ideal locations.

I'm trying Kristin and something else (i forgot what i ordered!) on Gisela 5 from Raintree. God knows that fruit will be a ? mark for this area.

I live in Jefferson Twp. NJ and planted a "Stella" cherry tree 2 years ago. The first year we had about a dozen cherries off of the tree. Last year about 2 dozen. Then last summer some of the leaves began to curl on the tree. I have never sprayed this tree with any chemicals. Hopefully whatever ailed the tree last summer won't come back.

Well, I don't know too much about the specific varieties Bing and Ranier but I did live in Michigan as recently as three years ago. We used to go cherry picking just north of Grand Rapids for both sweet cherries (couldn't tell you if they were Bing but Ranier was definitely one of the varieties for sale) and tart. They were fairly cheap and the orchards fairly large. But that may not be much in terms of agricultural significance for an entire state. It was zone 5 and not influenced by the lake that far inland. Didn't even get lake effect that far inland as I recall. Now I'm in a zone 5/6 area, also too far from a great lake for a beneficial microclimate. I recently saw an old half dead sweet cherry tree. It had not been cared for in quite some time. But it was covered by nicely flavored but small sweet cherries. It didn't seem to be suffering from a bug infestation - more like the trunk had split and lost a large limb. Long story short - if you have time and space, it might be worth an experiment. If your zone 5 suffers from late frost then cherries might be few and far between. I'm thinking of experimenting with cherries myself these days. Cindy

To determine the proper depth at planting, I'd gently dig down/flake the soil off of the top of the rootball until I got to the first root. Trees should be planted so that the highest root is approximately at ground level (in some cases with poorly draining soil, just slightly above that). Often trees and shrubs come planted at the wrong depths from the nursery. Unfortunately you can't assume that the top of the rootball is the correct planting depth. With some growers, as long as there is dirt and a plant in the pot, it's ready to sell. I will provide a link to my planting instructions below. If read carefully, I think/hope they will answer most of your planting questions. Weed barriers (the plastic and fiber stuff) will usually kill preexisting weeds and grass by cutting off their light, but they do nothing, or next to nothing, to stop seeds from germinating and growing roots down through the material. They also do nothing to control spreaders (like Bermuda grass), which also sends roots down through the material. When weeds and grass anchor themselves through the weed barrier, they can become impossible to remove without removing the entire weed barrier. I've actually done jobs where we had to remove the entire weed barrier by either cutting it into small sections and digging the whole mass of weeds, roots, and weed barrier out or use a skidsteer to scoop the mess out. Talking about a disaster! The second reason that root barriers are bad is because the repel water and nutrients and decrease soil gas exchange. All of them do this to some degree; some are worse than others. The ones that do the best job of blocking weed growth are probably the worst for blocking water, nutrient, and gasses. Another reason they are bad is because they block decomposing mulch from being mixed into the soil. Mulch can really benefit the tilth and fertilization of your soil if allowed to break down and mix into the soil. Here is a link that might be useful: Planting a Tree or Shrub

red2225, I made "all fruit" preserves with some of my Bing's, I just crushed the fruit, squeezed a fresh lemon over the top, added a little bit of water and cooked it until it was thick, then sweetened with a bit of Equal for Cooking to taste. You could use splenda too, but Dad likes Equal better. I added the sweetener right at the end, then jarred it up and canned it. It set up fine, unlike the stuff with the Sure Jell for no-sugar which never did set. I hate commercial pectin. As Ken pointed out, a lot of people use Pomona's and love it. I'd rather just cook mine thick, I find Pomona's to be a bit bothersome to mix and use and I can only buy it via mail order, so I just cook mine. I did think of adding some white grape or apple juice for the additional pectin, in place of the water but that's another experiment. Annie

Helen Zone 6 Ohio Me too, never watered the garden once the entire summer. The whole year was a gray year. I feel like we didn't have hardly any sunshine for well over a year. I lost 80 tomato plants because of blight with the wettness, blight was bad in a lot of areas of my Province. I think it's going to be another bad year for fruit farmers in my region. Here it was the coldest winter on record for 80 years. I had poor goat babies being born in -25 c. Even being right there for the birth, with a hair dryer and towels and bringing them into the house as soon as possible we had one guy loose the tips of both his ears. I had to bring a full grown goat and her two babies in my house too because their ears froze. Not sure how but those boys didn't loose their ears. Where I am everything has just started to bud. I could see the frost damage already from the cold snap a few days ago. :( I'm hoping that when I get my order of fruit trees it stays fairly decent. My neighbor told me that they've had frost as late as mid June in past years!

Raider Rick, look under the curled leaves for little black dots. They are a kind of aphid that loves sweet cherries. You will need to get them off somehow since they significantly stunt the growth of the tree. They are hard to spray because they are so embedded in the curled leaf; it also makes it hard for ladybugs and the like to get them. If your tree is small you can hand blast them off with a hose or a sprayer filled with soapy water. And, keep coming back to look for them, all it takes is a couple survivors and in a month you will have a huge colony of them again. I have found these guys a big pain on my sweet cherries.

If you are determined to plant a Bing cherry in New Jersey, go ahead and plant one. Then come back here in about 7-8 years and we will discuss the results. They won't be good.

By that time I will be the ancient Jellyman, and you will be a wiser Last Earth.
