Squash & cucs set fruit on new branchs, ok to prune lower leaves?

New gardener observation: I have squashes and cucurbits vines climbing on trellies. As the plants grow from early age, the vines grow longer/ higher untill a certain age when the flowers start to set. The flowers and fruit is set on the newer branches only. The older bottom leaves and branches don't seem to contribute anything except that they are close to the ground and shaded. Those are the leaves that get the aphids first. On my plnats these leaves are loaded with aphids while the ones on upper newer branches not so much. Should the older leaves and branches be pruned. Will that cause any problems to the plant? Even though leaves are responsible for synthesizing food for the plnat and collect the sun energy, if bottom leaves are prunned there would still be plenty of leaves to do that. Is my thesis correct? Thanks for the input.
