Harrow Sweet- more good news

alan haigh

I have a real fondness for pears that ripen in early Oct here, but later ripening pears tend to be biennial in my location- Bosc and Sheldon, for example. That is they alternate from pretty heavy to light years- sometimes barren ones.

My Harrow Sweet bore a heavy crop last year and is loaded with flowers again this one. Now I just hope that the cold didn't destroy the buds- they do look a bit burnt, but pears will often singe but still bear. It amazes me that even branches that are nothing but spurs with no vegetative growth (shoots)have a full bloom setting up.

It would be great if this one is a reliable annual cropper on my site- not many are. Harrow Delight is one, but it is a summer pear.
