No, don't use a towel..get a coffee filter, easier to handle..and put your seeds in it. Drop the whole thing into a shallow dish like a custard cup and cover with water. Let them soak there until they show some white bits. I pour off the water the next day and pour fresh water over them, but I use the same filter. I've had some in a filter for a week or more, and they are still good to go. But they are no longer in water, just the damp filter. In that case it's like a damp towel. But I'd start them COVERED in water for more than a couple of days. I'm sure you'll have great success as I did, unless the seeds are old. And you will know in a couple of days, I promise you. I just noticed looking at that pot, the new leaves make it look like dragon flies hovering..and I have it with the most beautiful little day lily tuft. Even now they are gorgeous to me! Just get a well draining good potting soil. You can set them out in the ground if you want once they have rooted well, but pots are so much easier to control, imo.

margo_grow - Is it possible for you to post a picture of your blooms(?)in the morning after they open...as the flowers fade later in the day,they can often turn a 'pinkish' color... The botanical name for "Heavenly Blue" is "Ipomoea tricolor" and there is another cutivar of Ipomoea tricolor known as "Wedding Bells",but "Wedding Bells" has not been comercially available for many years... I have seen a revival of an Ipomoea nil cultivar known as "Candy Pink" mistakenly marketed as Ipomoea tricolor...the seeds of both Heavenly Blue and Wedding Bells are a dark brown to black in color,but real Candy Pink seeds are a light tan color... Ipomoea tricolor is completely glabrous (i.e.,no hair) in comparison to Ipomoea nil which has hairy stems and leaves... Hope this info helps... TTY,... No and Yes...I had a very vigorous heavenly blue vine that in the yard which was planted a little late, so since HB is a late bloomer, by the time it had it had started developing its first flower buds the 1st frost was forecasted outside. The frost would have killed it right before starting to bloom. So I took lots of cuttings that just had tiny flower buds starting to form and put them in water on a sunny window sill. And even without roots just in plain water over the next month those small buds would develop into dozens of 3" - 4 1/2" blooms and further developing seed pods (got 10 seeds in the end) without roots, nutrients, just plain water. It was a very pleasant experiment and colorful November, while the frost killed all the other annuals outside, I had lots of heavenly blue flowers indoors for almost a whole month. So I plan on doing this again next year at the end of the growing season.
