Thinning Asian pears at bud stage

To me Asian pears are about the most tedious fruit to thin. They way over-set and the leaves around the fruit are very thick. So in the last issue of The Good Fruit Grower they outlined a method of thinning at bud stage. They call it flicking off all or part of the fruit bud cluster while leaving the leaf buds just below.

Over the last week I've been giving it a try. I've only knocked off about half the flower buds because we will probably have another freeze. At the right stage the whole flower bud cluster pops right out. Now I'm now at the stage where the buds are separating, so I'm pulling off the most advanced flowers.

Overall I think the method has merit and I'll use it again.

Has anyone else tried this?
