sinus infection
Comments (26)I use a neti pot (aka 'nasal irrigation') for general sinus health. Since I started about 2 years ago, my chronic sinus issues have improved by 80%. I mix 1/4 tsp salt (with a little bicarbonate) per cup of water, heat for about 12 seconds in the microwave to make it approximately body temperature, and put it in a neti pot and pour it through one nostril, out the other. This helps moisturize the sinuses, flushes allergens, and improves the health of the cilia and mucous membranes. Some neti practices include adding a drop or two of vegetable oil (sesame or sunflower) to moisturize when humidity is low, or use of diluted herbal teas with salt to directly treat the sinuses. I bought my neti pot at a major pharmacy chain near my house - it included basic instructions and 50 or 100 premixed saline packets (nice for travel). Now I mix my own salt and the cost per day is a fraction of a cent. There is a short book on Neti by David Frawley that covers the subject in more depth. Good if you Really have sinus issues, but not necessary if you just want to do the basic saline rinse from time to time. Comments (7)Thanks everyone for all the replies. I have used hydrogen peroxide allot for all my ear problems, that was recommended my the doctor. In the past I have had some success with equal parts vinegar and rubbing alcohol. This last time I just used hp and saw some ear drops at the vitamin shoppe that has grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil from a company called nutribiotic that seemed to work well although they are it is very thick....See MoreSenior Cat Has Ear Infection
Comments (9)The one question I have about this thread is - do these vets actually identify specific bacteria that actually need to eradicated with antibiotic or are they just guessing and throwing a drug at a problem (like happens with humans overprescription of antibiotics). If the latter - look at systemic issues. My cats both had brownish discharge and constant scratching of ears until they were diagnosed with hyperthyroid and treated - then it completely cleared up. Ear discharge is on no lists of hyperthyroid symptoms , but yet since hyperthyroid speeds everything up and throws body metabolism so out of whack - its not unreasonable to conclude there was a connection. Agree that using ANY reported toxic substance on or around cats should be scrupulously avoided. Consider that cats are doubly at risk - because of their habit of obessively licking and cleaning themselves they are going to ingest far more of anything than another animal woud....See Moretrudika
