1st time I ever pruned a tree!

This weekend was the first one this year that was pleasurable to be outside, so, pruners in hand, I went around the yard. The apple tree we planted last year needed some attention. It is so hard, though, to know exactly what to do when your tree doesn't look like any of the illustrations, so I hope I did more good than harm. The top branched off into 2 and one went out at about a 45-degree angle for a few inches, and then up, but the other one went straight up and was rubbing on one of the side branches so I cut it off at the bottom. I also took off any little branches that went straight up or were heading in a direction to cross another branch, then I cut off the little "nubs" on all the branches that were also looking like when they grew up would either go up or across. Unfortunately, one of the cuts I made didn't go cleanly through and tore the bark a little ways down. Is there something I should do for that or will it heal on its own?
