Allergies are ruining my life!
Comments (22)I have an entirely different idea - your symptoms sound exactly like those you get if you have sleep apnea. It is something more people get when they're older, but even young children can have it. It is associated with extra weight, but unless you are heavy, there are also anatomical reasons for it (like a slightly lower palate, tonsil problems, and others), and you need to be seen by an ear, nose and throat specialist (your family doctor could set that up), plus have a sleep study (where you have a couple of small wires taped to your chest and wear a small plastic clip on your finger (painless) for one night to test for the condition. It can be very serious IF it's not treated - the headaches are due to high blood pressure (if you have apnea) and the tiredness is because you are not sleeping well at all - you actually end up holding your breath (in your sleep) for a few-many seconds at a time, many times a night, and the gasps you take each time afterward can really tire you out. Please, please show this note to your mother and ask her to look into it - it really needs to be taken care of (also painless!) if you have it. I know - I do (and lots of other people too)....See MoreDogs and Skin Allergies Help
Comments (21)Our Megan used to get all itchy this time of year. She would end up on corticosteroids, which made her nervous and she would pant and just not settle and relax. I hated seeing her like that. A few years ago I took her to a holistic vet. He put her on a predigested dog food and some supplements. One supplement was licorice, one was an auto-immune remedy that was actually made for people. I started her on this treatment at least a month before her seasonal allergy time. It turned out that she became sensitive to that darned dog food with the predigested proteins - just after I bought a second bag of it. She would vomit after eating it. If I remember right, we had to take her in to our own vet to get her looked at for vomiting. So OUR vet says, why not do an allergy blood test? This is the same vet who was giving her prednisone every August and September! He knew we had pet health insurance and would have done anything to help her feel better. So he ran the allergy test and it came back saying she was allergic to beets, potatoes, carrots, and wheat. The way the holistic doctor explained it to us was that if she is allergic to food, that is a year-round thing. If she is not reacting year-round, it is because her immune system was not overwhelmed and was coping with that level of irritation. When you added her seasonal inhalant allergies in August and September, she was then overwhelmed, and the result was skin irritation - which seems to be the most common way that allergies of all types are seen in dogs. So, every summer we would get very diligent about her food allergies, starting in about June. That way, by August she would not be having reactions to her food and would better handle the inhalant allergies that started then. After starting this routine, we were able to control her allergies and keep her comfortable with a Benadryl pill once or twice a day....See MoreCalm Coat is a MIRACLE for itching & allergies!
Comments (7)I guess there was some discussion on whether or not my post was spam. But its not. i just wanted to share my find because after all the money I have spent on trying other products with NO results, I was at my wits end. Recently we ahve been trying to use more all natural products & I stumbled upon this site that has a lot of good info so I thought I would share my find with others like me. Riley is the best dog ever! He is a wheaten terrier that just LOVES people. But he was always licking his paws & itching EVERY time we came in from walks. he almost lost a large amount of hair from itching so much. I tried vet prescribed shampoos, pills, homemade remedies but nothing worked until I found Calm Coat. I am a true beleiver in this product & its made from simple all natural ingredients so i love it....See MoreUse of homeopathic/herbal remedies
Comments (37)So along these lines, I just tried taking some melatonin to help me sleep. I'm really paranoid of prescription sleeping meds though I have tried them and they work wonderfully with no apparent side effects. I'm still concerned about becoming dependent on them. In any case in spite of doing all the other recommended practices to sleep - exercise but not too late, quiet, dark, etc. sometimes I get very little sleep - maybe 3-4 hours. I then have to go to work at a very demanding job for 10 or more hours and I simply cannot function like that. So now I'm avoiding prescription meds and taking something that could be just as dangerous. I've done some reading of what I consider to be fairly reputable sources - lots of potential side effects and possible drug interactions with other meds (none of which I take from what I can tell). It seems to have become more effective after using it for a few days - works great. Interestingly my mother tried taking it years back and she thought it did nothing. Maybe I'm experiencing the placebo effect. It's an interesting dilemma....whether or not to take anything at all to treat a "problem" and if so what. I've also taken Zicam which considers itself to be homeopathic. I find it works really well at heading off cold symptoms - unlike anything else I've ever found. If I didn't have to go to work every day I'd probably be more inclined to just suffer with my ailments but I need to be able to go to work and be functional....See Moreflowersandthings
