Scent Allergies

does anyone have any suggestions for helping deal with allergies to scents? Perfumes and colognes can make me miserable, with scratchy throat, nasal congestion, coughing and in certain cases numb tingly lips. While I've asked everyone I share my office with to not wear scents I can't control the general public. My doctor's given me nasal sprays and antihistamines but with strong scents they don't seem to help at all.

This is a deeply entrenched problem that can't be fixed on an internet forum. You need personal attention. I suggest you find a qualified herbalist who can do a tongue and pulse diagnosis to help you. Also, a good herbalist will custom blend the raw herbs for you to cook at home or he'll do them for you. This way of herbology is called "classic" herbology as opposed to "traditional" herbology.

I've been looking, trying to find someone that isn't 50 miles away, any suggestions where to look to find a listing of providers?

Thanks sara-s fo responding. Yes AstorLite is a type of paraffin. I've only ever worked with paraffin...not sure if I would like soy. Also don't know how the process differs. The 7 day candle jar (silly me I should know folks wouldn't automatically id them mentally) is 2.25" in diameter and usually 8-8.5" tall. I actually received a lot of advice from Bitter Creek...chatted with their person on-line which is why I initally purchased the wick sample pack and did the trial & error thing. I guess I'm hoping someone will tell me if I switch from a zinc core to a pure cotton wick and get the right size that it won't smoke. The first time I made candles was with pure cotton, but it was sized for wider containers I believe, not sure since it was bought by someone else for a group craft gathering. Still hoping for a brilliant short cut to get the residue out of the jar! I have several in the freezer to remove the remainder of the wax at the bottom (I guess I bought the wick holders with too high a whatchamacall it, lol). But then I have to face getting all that soot out...ugh! Thanks again, Suz

We went into a shop in Camden, Maine this past summer that sold Maine-made crafts, art, gifts and tchotchkes. And scented candles. Even though I was looking for a Maine-themed gift for our pet sitter, I could only spend 15 seconds in the store before I had to leave, because of the overpowering candle scent. My favorite "candles" are the tiny electric tea lights. Smell free, flame free, smoke free, wax-dripping free. Maybe this preference is partly because I made a winter-themed table centerpiece as a kid-- with twigs to simulate trees, cotton balls to simulate snow, and a candle in the middle all in an aluminum pie plate. I decided to put the centerpiece in place, and light the candle, and then went to get everyone so they could see it. We came back into the kitchen, and the whole thing was aflame. My parents doused it with water, but it was destroyed, and it had melted a hole in the middle of the brand new table cloth and scorched the table beneath it. Traumatic.

I like scented candles & oil diffusers - not so much as an air freshener but just because I like the nice scents. During the summer I like scents like lemon & lime. During the fall & winter, I like scents like cinnamon or vanilla. One of my absolute favorites is the one I use for Christmas - Woodwick's Frasier Fir. It makes the house smell like I have a live Christmas tree.

watchmelol, you get not only one, but TWO standing ovations from me! You're hitting the nails on the head fer sure! I just can't understand why people are so addicted to stench. I understand why the 70 & 80 yo women marinate in the stink juices, they've lost their sense of smell and are so indoctrinated that they have to have stench upon stench they keep pouring it on so you can smell them aisles away in a store. And one isn't enough. Gotta have the stinking shampoo, stinking conditioner, stinking soap, then stinking deodorant, stinking cologne, stinking hairspray, stinking foot spray, and of course the clothes have to be washed in high stench detergent, higher stench fabric softener (with longer lasting stench) and 2 or 3 dryer sheets tossed in to add a little more stench. And the other stench added on. It all adds up to them smelling like a cross between dog farts, cat vomit and rotten eggs. Give me the great unwashed masses over this. People complain about smokers but put up with this? There isn't a body odor that compares to how scented candles literally make me gag. Those Christmas tree air fresheners? I can't ride in a car with them unless I hang my head out of the window - I will throw up, although maybe I should. Would improve the smell. For air fresheners in my home I use two types when needed. One is Lysol spray for disinfectant properties when desired and the other is the one that uses citrus oils. I do find them pleasant smelling, I don't choke or gag from it and it really kills foul odors.... like when the marinated ones use my bathroom or something. Why do people feel they need to smell like a porta-potty anyway? One of life's great mysteries. I'm really surprised at how many here have posted that they don't like the society sanctioned stench so prevalent these days. I like the "smell" or more accurately the lack of smell of fresh air. Why the need to pollute it? With all the trips to the hospital the past 5 years or so I was so thrilled when I saw that the hospital my doctor required me to use had big signs up that it was a stench-free building. And they enforced it. It's just plain wonderful. People threw their hissy-fits over smoking indoors, why doesn't the Indoor Clean Air Act cover perfume, hairspray, cologne, laundry soaps, etc? Oh, that's right, it's not fashionable to object to people smelling like skunks.

I checked on google and can't come up with anyone. However, the best thing to do is to go to your local China Town. Ask around for a reputable herbalist who will treat round eyes (non-Asians) without prejudice.

the american herbalist's guild (the only professional org for herbalists in the u.s.) has an herbalist directory on their site. if you visit an ahg registered herbalist you may be assured they have received excellent training.

I've got that. I don't mind the scent of real flowers or fruit, but the scents of pseudo-flora are horrid. I think it's not you, it's society putting poison chemicals into everything as fragrance and telling everyone normal natural scents are disgusting in order to sell their crap. Allergies are mostly immune problems so they give you a pill to block it, but it should be normal to choke in the presence of harsh airborne chemicals, I really think it's weird the masses get conditioned to think it's pleasant. It's typically known as hypersensitivity.

These are what I do.

Tell them they stink of fermenting fruit.

Light a candle near you or 'purify' the area you're in by going around your air with it (they burn up the oxygen that is carrying the yuckyness - unscented candles of course - and certain candles work better)

Arm & Hammer cat litter deodorizer - it's got a chemical in it too, but it's one of the few that I don't think is that bad. The other brands don't mask odor as well.

Find natural herbal oils that are volatile and you like. Put a few little drops in water and spray.

Circulate air away from you.

liver clearance is super important in these cases. learn to use dandelion root as tea on a regular basis, it'll help clear and strengthen the liver and boost immunity.
