New kiwi varieties to come

The kiwi world will be in the next few years like other fruits, with several varieties to choose. The monovarietal (Hayward) offer is a thing of the past.

In New Zealand and, in a minor intensity, in other countries (Italy, France,...) are working to develop new outstanding kiwi varieties.

There are currently other varieties but when New Zealands are saying to be close to commercialize new varieties it is because they have really good new varieties between hands. They developed the gold variety Hort16a and it is said, by far, to be the best gold variety so far.

Unfortunately they will be protected varieties, only for professionals.

"A red kiwifruit is close to being commercially viable, and four other promising new cultivars - an early ripening, sweet, green variety, an early gold and two long-life gold fruit - are being tested in-market by shoppers."

"HortResearch bred the Hort16A golden kiwifruit - which brings in more than $468 million in global revenue annually - but passed the plant variety and marketing rights to Zespri. It also has a collection of at least 23 different species of kiwifruit, from which it has been breeding novel cultivars to follow the golden kiwifruit to market.

I love the kiwi fruit that I purchase at the grocery store. Especially Trader Joes. And one fruit I buy at Trader Joes that I don't think I could grow is the delicious Lichee. If you are in a climate, and have the room, UC Davis will ship you cuttings of whatever they are testing.

Thanks for the link, but UC Davis don't send cuttings to Spain. The vegetal stuffs need sanitary certificate to enter in Europe.

I know that there are several kiwi varieties out there, but most of them are of limited value. Can be interesting for private growing but not for commercial.

I am referring to new varieties with some new valuable and differentiating characteristics, only within reach of highly financed breeding projects like Hort Researchs in New Zealand.

That is interesting. There are A. chinensis and A. deliciosa that have a red inner pericarp, and a few with some red throughout. The ones with bright yellow surrounding a bright red center are much more attractive. This pink one does not look quite so nice. Hopefully the taste will make up for it. ~kiwinut

The green Zespri brand kiwis are small like the first kiwis I saw in the grocery stores many years ago. I bought some very large green kiwis a few months ago, and they almost looked like two fruits fused together. The cashier told me she used to enjoy kiwis, but said she didn't like them anymore. The flavor of the large fruit was bland, and I remembered why I stopped buying them. When I saw the Zespri brand green kiwi, I decided to see if they were as good as the golden kiwis. They were not, but still alot better than the other green kiwis. So that is what had me suspecting there was more than one clone used other than Hayward. Is the ZespriGold a single clone grown only by Zespri growers? It will be a while before my gold seeds grow into fruiting plants, so if anyone knows where mature plant material can be found for sale or trade, I'd love to get a a pair. Green Dragon - New Hadeco variety coming soon

I still have to see an inferior quality Sonata/Sonatini from Hadeco. All the Hadeco Sonata/Sonatini varieties that I have in the collection have performed well with flowers showing their excellent choice in producing/selling ONLY good quality varieties in their hybridization. Hadeco describes Jade Serpent as "light green" and Green Dragon as "green". So hopefully it will have a darker green than Jade Serpent. Comparing the data of both varieties, GD will have a slighter smaller flower than JS. GD will have taller scapes. And GD would be less floriferous than JS (# of scapes /bulb size). Both GD and JS have an average of 4 flowers/scape. My JS on it's second season this year produced a scape with 6 flowers though. Now when are they going to release this variety??? Time to email Mr. CB!!! Royal Colors is also offering Jade Serpent this season. I highly recommend this variety. Jade Serpent...simply beautiful!!!
