Also: Royal Colors started to carry South African varieties, and they offer the newest Bambara too. Time to start buying up.

Hadeco Bulbs?

I notice that the Hadeco bulbs are not as sturdy as the Dutch ones. When I was lifting my bulbs from the bed, I noticed that the Hadeco varieties had been rotting on the outside in a larger percentage than the Dutch ones. I believe this rot was kind of a protective layer on the healthy bulb, but nevertheless, peeling them off, the bulbs lost girth. They are still nice, but as I said: they were the ones that I should have lifted before the rainy season. I am glad though I lifted the bulbs this weekend. We are having a week long worth of rains now. Also, I notice that Hadeco bulbs like to get planted right at the beginning of the Season. Hadeco bulbs that get planted after new year (generally speaking) usually perform low. I believe this is what we experience with our minis with Jodi. Next year, we will be more careful to plant the Hadeco varieties earlier and enjoy their flowers to their maximum. So these factors might be the reason retailers shy away from Hadeco. They need to be sold quick and they need to be planted as soon as possible after shipping. This is just my general perception. I might be wrong.

I e-mailed them today to see if they sent a replacement yet. I got a response from Aaron telling me that he and his wife had a talk about whether I had Candy Floss or not - he thinks what I have is Candy Floss, just that growing conditions can change colors of the flower. He added that he sent a replacement bulb just to be sure. Just to put it out there, Can stamen/anthers change from white to pink in a stressed situation? Has anyone seen that happen on their plant?

It is nice indeed. It is a picture of the lady I got it from, so it is not my flowering bulb yet. I had to cut the leaves off, so it is outside in the bed, trying to recover right now. It has two rootless babies on it. First I thought of Clivia too, but the leaves are not wide. Looking at the pictures of Cyrtanthus Elatus (Scarborough Lily) compared to this picture, I think I have this one... I will definitely tell you later when it is in bloom. I hope I can keep it and keep it well. When I saw the bulb, I knew it was not a hippeastrum, but I didn't rule out amaryllid origins. Thank you for finding out what it's name is.

The shape of them blooms looks promising. Note these broad wings. And, I am sure that the depth of the color is in an inhonest fashion over exaggerated. The Company Hadeco has lost my confidence by consistently producing pictures with irreal colors. IF a cultivar has pink blooms it should not be displayed with blooms in purple, and if the color is yellowish green it should not be displayed using a Granny Smith apple green :(

I have to agree with Hans after visiting the Hadeco sight. It's very obvious that many of their photos have been "color enhanced". I just stopped by the Royal Colors sight. They have some lovely new offerings too.

ROFL! Granny Smith apples! Hans-Werner, that is a great description, and you'd better watch it or the vendors will grab it!

Cindee, I have started looking a little, but only a little. Like last year, I have come to a point where I know I will soon have lots of seedlings blooming, Soooo... That means, I'm gonna being extra picky about my selections AND crosses.

Still, I always have to select few new ones (and some like my favorite old ones) to add to the collection so that I will have pretty blooms in the winter. Otherwise, I have to wait for spring.

Hopefully, someone will purchase Granny Smith Apple Green, and we can see what it actually looks like.

Granny Smith apples are a light speckled green in color.

A cultivar created from hybrids Malus domestica x Malus sylvestris by Maria Ann (Sherwood) Smith in 1867 Sydney Australia.

It would be interesting if H.Green Dragon was speckled green.

I still have to see an inferior quality Sonata/Sonatini from Hadeco. All the Hadeco Sonata/Sonatini varieties that I have in the collection have performed well with flowers showing their excellent choice in producing/selling ONLY good quality varieties in their hybridization.

Hadeco describes Jade Serpent as "light green" and Green Dragon as "green". So hopefully it will have a darker green than Jade Serpent. Comparing the data of both varieties, GD will have a slighter smaller flower than JS. GD will have taller scapes. And GD would be less floriferous than JS (# of scapes /bulb size). Both GD and JS have an average of 4 flowers/scape. My JS on it's second season this year produced a scape with 6 flowers though.

Now when are they going to release this variety??? Time to email Mr. CB!!!

Royal Colors is also offering Jade Serpent this season. I highly recommend this variety.

Hi Maria (girlfriend!) how does Serpent compare to the lemon & lime color you have? Is it more intense green? It looks to have a more elyptic shaped petals than L&L might be worth a try this year.
