Mine are just planted this year, and wonderful. Big berries, excellent taste, firm unlike most yellows. I'm impressed. I have only found ants on blackberries. But it's that time of year they go kinda crazy. I still have two yellow cultivars to test, Honey Queen and Cascade Gold. Cascade is unusual in that it is a June bearing cultivar. Super hardy 7 foot canes. Fall Gold seems steady. Often described as sweet, but mine are quite tart, and I love them! Maybe Kiwi Gold does have problems as it seemed to have been dropped from most nurseries. But that doesn't mean anything. Many of the best peaches from Scott's evaluation are not available either. Kiwi Gold is a sport of Heritage. It could be called Heritage Gold. So i suspect it behaves much like Heritage, afterall that was it is. Anne seems to be the leader, but many commercial producers are dropping it due to it's lack luster performance, and sun burn problems. The berry itself is excellent. So far though my fav is still Fall Gold for it's full flavor. I need a lot more time though to see how these plants perform long term. So far all are decent IMHO. I'll trade a Kiwi sucker for a Goldie sucker! I'm finding Kiwi Gold to be an excellent plant. It is a Heritage, disease resistant, large berries, upright nature. It can hold fruit up w/o trellis. Mine is trellised, but it is not tied to it. The berries are sweeter than Fall Gold. I have both right here. I also have Anne, and they are just as sweet as Anne. That plant though needs a trellis no doubt. Kiwi is a lot more vigorous too. First year for Anne and Kiwi Gold. Anne has one fruiting cane, and Kiwi Gold has 4 canes producing. That could be position, or original plant size. But Kiwi was the worst bare root I have ever seen when it arrived. Completely dry in straight peat, full of white growth. I really didn't expect it to survive, but it not only survived it produced 4 fruiting canes. The florocanes usually fruit too, but it was so bad it died. I thought it was a goner, but then new canes arose out of the ground. Fruit when ripe is a darker yellow (not orange) than Fall, or Anne. It seems many yellows just go off the market. In the UK they also have orange and whites. Many of those are gone from there too. Next year I'll have two additional yellows fruiting, Honey Queen, and Cascade Gold.

I'm not sure how you can tell it is not? Mine for sure is, as none of the other yellows produce without support, and being a sport of heritage, it doesn't need support. My plant produced on 5 canes, and all leaned very little, it's kiwi gold for sure. they didn't grow the plant, it's packaged like it came from Home Depot, in a box from a huge breeder. I have no concerns as to what it is. I got mine in April, but they have been sold out till about a week ago. I'm sure soon to be sold out again. get it while you can. And as I said the plant came in in poor condition, but survived anyway. Glad it did, it is an excellent plant. I can say for sure it's not fall gold, Anne, honey queen, or cascade gold. I grow all those too, and it's nothing like any of them. It sort of looks like cascade gold, but it fruited on the ends, so it can't be cascade gold, a summer bearing plant. Besides the fact primocanes fruited, which of course cannot happen with cascade gold. Here is a photo of mine. 3 canes are pictured, one is so loaded, it is leaning down. I picked two berries off it today, this photo is from 2013 10 02. So it has been producing for over a month. It may fruit earlier next year as plant becomes accustomed to it's new home. ralph, i can bring you a pot to the spring swap. just let me know if you'd like that. like black raspberries they tip root, so i always have a few more to give away. they don't seem to runner much, which is nice. the flavor is a bit more tart and rich than regular red rasps and they are in a sticky calyx. they are clear red orange, rather than frosted, and absolutely gorgeous! my family likes them better than reg red rasps- though they are a little smaller. they bear out within a week or 2- faster harvest than reg rasps. they have very long vines- like around 15-20', so plan to run them along a fence or up a tall trellis and back down. they fruit on 1 yr old wood, same as most cane berries. they look super thorny, but most of the prickles are soft. i plan to have a whole row of them in my shadier back yard so that we get enough to freeze instead of just enough to eat them fresh. mmmm. my black rasps are in the ground, and other than some sort of winter/gall damage i get occasionally on 1 or 2 canes, they have done super. better than the reds, matter of fact, and the flavor is so rich! we adore them. i wish i had room to grow more. they are in my best light- about 6 hrs of sun, and in a fairly loamy soil. right beside the driveway, so they probably get some reflected light & heat from the gravel. i've never sprayed them with anything, except occasionally when i have the oil spray out and have some left (which holds true for all the canes). the jap beetles don't seem to target them as much as the reds, another bonus. i love the bright purple color of the winter canes, and get comments on it ofen. i can't remember if the variety is bristol or jewel. to be fair, my reds are in more clay soil, and get about an hr less sun a day. so far the blacks show no disease problems, knock on wood. the reds ahve had a bit of rust, but seem to have done better the last couple yrs. the one i have in a pot is a loganberry- suited to the pnw. it fizzled after 2 yrs in the ground, and i ordered another plant since we'd liked the berries so much. the one in the pot has been going strong for 4 yrs or so. it's thornless and a viner. doesn't produce tons of fruit, but what it does tastes heavenly! another cross that appears to have diied this yr is the wyeberry i got from edible landscaping. i had it about 3 or 4 yrs. the fruit was exceptionally good, though not plentiful, so i'll probably try it again, maybe potted. it's quite thorny. it's supposed to be well adjusted for our area, so i'm not sure what happened. it didn't appear diseased before it died. it was in a raised bed. if you can't tell, we are all fruit freaks in this family- especially berries! :) tam
