baby spinach problems w/pic

I'm not sure whats going on with my baby spinach. Take a look at thr pic and tell me what you think. I started out with good healthy green leaves and now this?? What is the problem and how do I fix it?

the proper way to grow spinach is over the winter. Tricky in zone 5.

I think your cymbidiums are fine. Several of my cymbidiums originally came with dark freckles on the leaf tips/edges as well - negative for virus. Subsequent new growth were spot-free. I think it's "normal" and prob. has to do with fertilizer/moisture conditions at the grower's. I notice this esp. with oncidium leaves as well. The dimpling on the the dendrobium is a little more worrisome - might have previously had spider mite problems. Keeping room humidity up should control possible mites outbreak. I quarantine all new plants for 3-4 weeks to see what bugs/issues crop up before letting them join the others. As Jane has already noted, both are high light plants. Good luck, alvin

I agree with #1 thru #3 #4 looks like Populus balsamifera (Balsam Poplar) to me. #5 I agree, Tilia americana #6 Most likely Pyrus calleryana - Callery Pear, which is known to many erroneously as "Bradford Pear" because that's the oldest, best selling cultivar. Agree with #7 and #8 #9 Eleagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive #6 and #9 are aggressive exotic invasives which you should consider trying to eradicate, not transplanting. Also, I'd say it's tempting to transplant wild growing trees and shrubs and it can be done with care, but more often than not it ends in failure. Many wild established trees and shrubs, even when still young, resent the root disturbance and don't adjust well and end up dying or taking several years to recover. Some species are exceptions though and it doesn't always end that way, but like I said often times it does. Out of the trees and shrubs you listed, I'd think the smaller Blueberries have the best chance at being transplanted and would behave the best in the landscape.

Is it soft anywhere around the base? Looks like it may have previous fungal/trauma issues, but that does not mean it is currently rotting. If soft spots, then that's a big problem and you may have to consider chopping it off at that point. But not if it is solid and the bottom does not seem to be getting progressively thinner, or changing in any way, actually. By the way, that may not be a graft on top, but a 'pinch' point ,common in many columnar cacti that suffer a period of no growth for whatever reason, and then restart again a year or so later. Some do that normally as weather cools down, but not seen Astrophytums do that too often, so I suspect got exposed to an abnormal situation.

Could be a fungus like Vladimir said, could also be an insect egg or just dirt on a bit of fluff. However, I'm more concerned with how dusty the leaves are. I may just be dust or it could be the beginnings of a spider mite infestation. It's a good idea to wash off the leaves from time to time, like maybe every 4-6 weeks. Take them outside and hose them off, or if that's not possible, put them in the shower and shower them off with cool water. Then let them drain well and put them back where they were. It helps prevent spider mites as they're attracted to dusty plants. And your plants love the rinsing off!

Probably rain or wind damage.
Spinach is very tender, close to 99% water (lol).
So the leaves can get bruises easily, I think.

Ive never heard of anyone in my area growing spinach during the winter? In the ground, under the snow and ice...really?

Yes, you can sow spinach in late September and it will overwinter. Snow will protect it. If you sow spring spinach, you must do it as soon as the snow is gone. It's very sensitive to heat and day length.

Let the bed dry out a bit, and hope for some open, sunny weather. The plants will take off, give you a good harvest, and then bolt. The destiny of spring-sown spinach.

Start more indoors in july and set them out in august.

I actually started sowing my spinach in march, planted it in late march. I'll get round two going in July. I still cant get my head around growing baby spinach over the winter. What if there is no snow to cover it? Winters in upstate ny can get down in the single digits and below zero on a regular basis in Jan & Feb. I find in unbelievable that they could survive those temps without some sort of protection. ie no snow

always take walks at night about 10 or 11 in my garden when things are young. Go with a flashlight and you will find slugs and earwigs....the two can really eat seedlings fast. If you are not into sqeezing them with your fingers take some forceps or tweezers. Be quick with the pincher bugs (earwigs) they move fast. By going out at night you can see how bad the problem is and just acouple nights might knock them back so you won't have to spray or use powders. Sometimes my wife joins me holding the flashlight for a romantic evening of bug squishing!!!
