sweet corn wa;y too short

I planted Kandy King hybrid sweet corn this year in a block about 4'x8'. It was a new plot, and I amended the soil with plenty of compost. It is supposed to be about 6' tall, but the plants are only about 3', with small ears maturing. Any ideas why the stalks and the ears are so small?
