Sweet potatoes in pots-too hot, how much water?

I grew sweet potatoes a couple years ago, most starts died in a late snow. Two grew very well and produced about 12 pounds each, but grew down below my fluffy raised bed into the rocky ground below and I had to get them out with a chisel.

So this time I want to raise them in pots. I have a bunch of 20 gallon black plastic pots. Should I put gravel in the bottom and punch extra drainage holes?

DO sweets prefer more or less water? And are the black plastic pots going to make the roots get too hot? I thought I'd put them in a line and run a soaker hose across them for watering. Would they be better in full sun or full shade? I don't have anything in between.

thanks,

Ellen
