i agree with mrdoitall. here in ct. the sept. temps can be all over the place. a heater and cool mister keep my bathroom at 80 degrees and muggy for a week of curing. they are 1 layer deep in cardboard boxes used for berry picking. for safety i turn everything off at night. my sweet potatos are sweet and last in the basement (50 to 60 degrees ) until april. the small thin ones are the first to go, they get soft at the ends. and they are not washed until i need them. i've read that fresh ones are not good baked, but can be candied or boiled, or put into pies. i like them baked, and haven't tried them uncured. maybe over time they sweeten up on their own ?

Good questions! As long as you keep some vines alive and healthy until spring, you can use the rooted tips as slips. The challenge is avoiding indoor pests like spider mites and whiteflies. For this reason I would limit how much vegetation you have growing, keeping in mind that whatever roots are present now will be in very bad shape by planting time in late spring. I suggest propagating your stock now, by rooting a fresh crop of stem tips in water, and then potting up some of those plants in late winter. They will grow into lush little plants that can be sunk into a bucket of sand when the weather warms in late spring, forming the foundation stock for your sweet potato slip nursery. Hope this helps.

I've had a devil of a time with Mimulus aurantiacus. If I water them through the summer, they die. If I don't water them through the summer, they die. One thing I've concluded, based upon the vast numbers I've seen in the wild this year (I make frequent trips up Palomar Mountain, and they are abundant on the lower sections of South Grade Road), is that I've gone overboard on trying to give them full sun. Part sun would be better, with some shade through the hottest parts of the day. But I live in Temecula, and my summer days are hotter than yours. As for S. clevelandii, I've had most success planting them in late fall. Right now I have a batch of plants grown from seed in no.1 pots. I'm nursing them through the summer, and they're getting about 6 hours of full sun every day. I don't have a shade house. In my situation, they don't have to be watered daily (usually every three or four days), but a single, ill-chosen day of forgetfullness could be fatal to them.

I have a very nice rosemary plant that I've been growing indoors for a while now and it's doing well...probably 8" to 10" tall and branching nicely...almost bonsai-like. I have been heeding the advice here....not overwatering. But I am also careful not to let it dry out. The tag for the care of the plant that came with it said that rosemary won't recover once completely dried out. When I have access to my desktop computer, I'll post a pic of it on photobucket. I also have had good success indoors with lettuce leaf basil, greek basil, lime mint and pineapple sage. I've plans to start some Kentucky Colonel mint indoors and some sweet basil. The lime mint and pineapple sage was just planted as an experiment. I had some cut and indoors in vase and they both developed very nice looking roots in the water, so I transferred them to a soil medium, and they did well. All my indoor plants are in clay pots like the one used by the original poster of this thread.
