Climbing white for cool summer Oregon??
Comments (3)Hi Peggy - I tried Sombreuil and it didn't do much at all. I have a lot of yellows, not very many whites, but one that has taken off and is loaded with buds this third year is Secret Garden Musk Climber, a single. In the Antiques forum some like Thomasville Lamarque - I tried the Southern Lamarque last year and it had a little too much mildew - I don't spray. A new one last year that was outstandingly vigorous, pretty clean, and repeating, but a dark cream/light yellow, was Phil Edinger's Noisette from Vintage. It's a double, but not tightly packed, and opened well in the cool weather. I am truly impressed with this rose - the only one that had this much energy for me in the first year was Crepuscule, and this one has much better repeat....See MoreCoastal California cheated out of summer..
Comments (13)I think it depends on how you define "coastal". I'm in the South Bay and I'm pretty sure we've had more than the normal number of heat waves this year--I believe there have been 5 periods that included a day of 95+. Actually the first heat wave was in April. HOWEVER, the days in between have been below average, I think. Of course the heat waves often affect areas that are just a few miles from the Bay, such as San Jose, and spare cities in the inner Bay. However I seem to remember that even San Francisco was hit pretty hard by the April heat. A quick count for San Jose: June-Aug.24th (ignores 90+ days in April and May) 60s and 70s: 60% 80s: 25% 90s: 15% Last year was bad for heat waves as well. Places like Oakland and San Francisco--and for that matter the Central Valley and Southern California--may not experience our heatwaves. But sometimes they do. California weather is complicated....See MoreCoastal Oregon, very cool summers

Comments (1)Check with your local rose society. Cool damp weather calls for low petal-count roses as the high petal-count ones are more likely to ball. Our society website has a list of recommendations for the South Puget Sound area. Here is a link that might be useful: Olympia Rose Society recommendations...See Moreskyastara
