if you think it's squirrels set up bird feeders and corn cobs around your garden to feed them. Squirrels are very opportunistic and seek soft, fresh dug ground and easy to get to plants. They will work around any barrier, but only if there isn't an easier source of nearby food.

Give them an easier source of food and enjoy their cuteness instead of their destructiveness.

Generally yes, but does my advice come with a money back guarantee? Nope ;-)

The idea is that squirrels are lazy and opportunistic while also being very capable acrobats capable of defeating most any fence or barrier with ease.

Squirrels like corn and it isn't sweet corn you have to sacrifice, regular old field corn intended for animal feed is fine. Pound nails into a board and impale the cobs on the nails and set out in the yard. Also bird seed is a favorite of squirrels so feed the birds and don't buy the anti squirrel feeders, let the birds and squirrels feed to their belly's content.

That should, hopefully do it. Well fed squirrels who can find easy meals are not as likely to bother gardens with any kind of fencing or other protection.

But, no guarantees. These are wild animals we are talking about.

The same holds true for deer as well. Many gardeners report growing favorite crops of deer with no deer damage as long as adjacent property is full of deer food.

That wouldnt work here. Without birdseed, I have one or two squirrels at a time once or twice a day. When I put birdseed out, I get seven squirrels at a time all day long.

Some critter ate my WHOLE sweet potatoe plant, before I even knew it was a sweet potatoe. My SIL gave me an ornamental plant that her MIL gave here, a Batata. Looked it up and its a sweet potatoe or a yam or something. Too late, nothing left but the tubers. Mebbe it'll grow back and he can eat it again. siiiiiiiigh.

What sorts of veggies? Tall? Medium? Low to the ground?

You could make a PVC box with pieces of PVC tubing and then the PVC connectors (link below) and then cable tie mesh to the sides of the box.

You could tray using earth staples to hold down mesh on the ground -- some animals don't like walking on mesh.

Strips of mylar tied to cages might help scare birds away if you think the culprit is a bird.
