armenian cucumbers

i had about 4 large seedlings of armenian cucumbers in the ground at my house and they all got eaten by deers. if i planted two seeds right now how much harvest would i get from them. how many cucumbers a week?

I planted my seeds about a week and a half ago here in Albuquerque, New Mexico and my plant is just beginning to flower. My experience with Armenian cucumbers is that they produce lots of very large cucumbers on an almost daily basis. The first time I planted them, I made the mistake of planting 9 plants. I had my own little rain forest of vines with fruits I couldn't even find until they were almost 3 feet long. From then on I only plant 1 plant and enjoy the fruit that comes in regularly. The female flower will have a "mini-cucumber" growing right below the flower... It does get huge. You don't need any shade cloth. It can take the heat and sun. It. Needs to be pollinated so those "baby" ones are unpollinated. Dont worry you will or should get lots of cucumbers by August. It does take a while and you wonder if you will ever get anything, then before you know it, you' ve got way too many.

Dorothy, We've only picked two Armenian cukes and about a billion pickling cukes, so I've been busy making pickles. I grow the Armenian cukes for us for fresh eating (and for the chickens, who love them) and the only other cukes I grow are pickling cukes (Sumter, County Fair and Eureka this year). Larry, I think food from the garden always tastes better than food from the store. Always and forever. It is why I plant such a big garden every year. Even home-preserved food tastes better to us than commercially-preserved food. Once you get used to building your meals around the food you grow, you don't want anything else. Shallot, I do think the Armenian cukes outperform standard cukes in our hottest weather. Partly it is that they seem more disease-resistant and more pest-resistant. The last two summers when it was so hot, my Armenian cukes didn't slow down at all even when the high temperatures were over 110 degrees. I plant tons of them so we have more than we can eat,and then I let some of them get really big (like big zucchini) and cut them in half and feed them to the chickens. They adore them and come running when they see me bringing them Armenian cucumbers. When it is really hot, the chickens get tired and stressed and having the Armenian cucumbers keeps them interested in eating and it helps them stay hydrated. Sometimes I cut big cukes in half and put them out by the compost pile for the deer to eat. The last couple of summers had such brutal heat and such dry conditions that I was doing everything I could to help the chickens and the wildlife endure the dog days of summer, and the Armenian cukes were a key part of my strategy. This year I have Armenian cukes in all three fenced gardens, where I let them grow on the garden fences, which are 8' tall. The deer and other wildlife can have any Armenian cukes they find growing on their side of the fence. I had a friend who grew them a few years ago. Her's were in ground and trellised on cattle panel. These are really good cucumbers, hollow in the center and the peels are edible, not bitter at all. Regular garden soil with a healthy addition of homemade compost and drip irrigation. No special care that I was aware of. I am going to plant some of those seeds this year! Thanks for reminding me :-)

Holy mackerel, you went from seed to flowering in a week and a half?! I'm not growing Armenians, but maybe I should start - lord knows that if they're coming up that fast, I'll have plenty of time for them to keep producing!

This is my first year of planting armenian cucs. They've done really well so far. I have a question for you all, if you don't mind me cutting in??? Has anyone experienced what looks like milky residue on the leaves? It looks like someone poured a milky liquid on the leaves and left it to dry. I can post a pic later; my armenians are the only cucs I'm growing that look this way.

AC is actually a gourd, not a cucumber. I have grown it before.

Amber..I looked at my AC's they don't have any white on the leaves but my zucs do but I believe it's just the variety (Raven) from Renee's garden.

Just for the record, The Armenian Cucumber is a melon (Cucumis melo) Handle heat a bit better than cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) Armenians will cross with other melosn.

These Armenian Cucumbers are great. I also found out if they go to seed , just scoop out the seeds and slice the cucumbers up in wedges and put them in a zip lock bag.They will be just as good as the small ones and they will stay crunchy for a long time and they will not get soft like a regular cucumber.They are amazing. This is the only cucumber that I will eat.
