Dried leaves toxic to cows????

My grandfather baled up all the dried leaves this year (mainly sugar maple... Acer saccharum). He had 10 bales total. Yesterday, I threw them in the heifer shed to bed the cows w/ that, rather than straw b/c they were there and I figured they'd make good bedding. Well, much to my surprise, my very well fed red angus started eating them! I got a bit nervous thinking that they may possibly be toxic to the cows.

What leaves are toxic to cows? These were mainly sugar maple, w/ maybe a few red maple (soft maple) leaves thrown in. No cherry, ash, oak, etc.

They're all alive today and none show signs of illness. I was just incredibly suprised to see them eating them when I had just given them very good second cutting dry hay! Maybe just odd cows?
