I purchased 10 fruit trees from Peaceful Valley and was very happy with the service and the trees I received. There are also pictures in that thread. Some nurseries still have stock on hand. You just have to go check them out.

Another good source is Bay Laurel. I'll be purchasing some low chill varieties from them since Peaceful Valley didn't have some of the ones I wanted.

Let us know what you end up purchasing. I just love keeping track of everybody's trees. :)

I agree with Sandra, both of those nurseries have great reputations. I also ordered 10 trees from Peaceful Valley and am very happy with both the trees and service.

If you are only getting one Asian Pear get the Shenseiki as its reliably self fruitful. I made the mistake of getting two asian pears a few years back that were supposed to pollinate each other and they have never flowered at the same time. To date I have never gotten a piece of fruit from either tree.

Most of the local nurseries are chuck full with bare root trees right now. Pro Build in Santa Cruz has a large selection of bare root trees right now, most of them are $19.99 a piece. Don't bother ordering online unless there is a special variety you want.

Note that persimmons are more expensive, not sure why. I just bought a "coffee cake" that cost $34, Fuyu is cheaper, though.

My counties Ag. extension offices has an annual fruit and nut tree sell sponsored by the local Master Gardeners club. They sell mostly bare root tress that the members grow for the sale. I bought 6 fruit trees from them last year in Jan and they are now well over 6ft tall. Might want to try that approach. Check surrounding couties also.

Thanks for your help. I went to some nurseries and the bare root trees are just arriving. And, yes, the persimmons are so expensive this year - double the cost of other trees. I now have added a white peach and white nectarine to my shopping list. So, I will keep looking around to find the right ones. The multi-grafted trees are also confusing me - would one tree with multi graft be better than several trees? Treenutt, the county ag. extension sale is a great tip - I will call them too.

Our Home Depot got some bareroot trees in. They are small and as everyone knows the trees they sell are often not true to label.

I purchased a nice 8'+ tall 1 1/2" caliper Anna Apple tree at A&P Nursery on Brown here last Friday. But I know its true to its label because its a Dave Wilson grown tree.

I wish the local nurseries carried the trees I wanted. Only low chill varieties will reliably produce fruit here. Even so most of the trees for sale here are high chill varieties.
When I ask why they sell trees that will not fruit here they say people want to buy Bing Cherry and Bartlet Pear trees and the low chill varieties don't sell.

The thing is all the trees that I purchased online started out like the big wonderful tree I purchased at my local nursery. Thats the way they arrive at the online nursery I purchased the other trees from.
Then they sell them to me and trim the roots and butcher the branches and cut off the top to fit them in a box. I don't blame them this is the way all the online nurseries do it. Besides the trees I received are larger and nicer than what I would get buying from most of the other online tree nurseries and I can't get the varieties I want locally.

If only local nurseries would carry low chill fruit trees. THISISME wishing out loud.

I used to get very upset when receiving trees ordered
from nurseries. I though that the trees should not have
been pruned...I wanted big trees. After grafting my own
trees, I learned that the nurseries were doing exactly what
needed to be done to insure the health and vigor of the
tree. Pruning actually promotes growth and shapes the
tree to manageable proportions. Without pruning, trees
can become tall, scraggly, and prone to wind damage at
a young age. Roots also can benefit from pruning management.
