Anyone growing these small berries? I have the plant shown here (given to me by a good friend)about 7 months now and within the last few weeks it has started to make some noticable growth. Before that it was just in a stall mode about 4 inches tall prehaps making roots. As you can see by the stick ruler I set beside the plant the tallest leaf is just now at the 12" high mark.

Lets here from you if you are growing these and what kind of luck you had with this berry.

Mine is still at your 4 inch mark. I have only had it for a couple months and it has neither grown or declined. I grew a couple from seed about 15 years ago, but lost them as very small plants

Mine is at a 6inch mark. About 7 months old. Maybe grew 1inch past 7months, heh.

You remind me i should check to see if the soil is still acidic enough for it. Think its needs to be as acidic as blueberry soil right (4.5?)?

HI RF, A lot depends on the size pot that you have them planted in. Violets do best in squat pots (commonly called Azelea pots). I see from your pictures that you are growing in terra cotta pots. Watch the plants carefully because the petioles frequently get damaged from the rough rim. Most good growers that still use clay pots coat the rims with wax which protect the leaves from damage. Personally I, and many others use plastic pots with rolled rims. In any case the plants generally start to send up bloomstalks when the roots reach the pot. Furthermore the crown of the plant determines the size of the pot. The pot should be 1/3 the diameter of the plant. Fred in NJ

Are you telling us that you have a single main stem with both Regular and Potato leaf types growing from it? If you had two seeds stuck or fused together, I would think you would have two main stems. I've seen that happen. If you do have just a single main stem, is there just one branch (lateral or sucker) that has the potato leaf form? If so you have a "sport" or spontaneous mutation. If you have multiple branches with the potato leaf form, then I am truly puzzled. Please note any fruit differences and let me be the first to say I'd like some seeds from both the "normal" (Regular Leaf) and the "sport" (Potato Leaf) branches. I'd be happy to send you a SASE. Yes, I had made my way over to that other section. Nothing very much like the same symptoms...though the photos again often focused on leaves. It's hard to describe, but the brown-black areas are a discoloration of the stem itself, a sort of rotten or moldy-looking area that has softeneded to the point of collapse, causing an area that is indented or 'fallen in' towards the interior of the stem. In some cases, it has deteriorated to the point that that area is open, exposing the interior of the stem. That's why I thought insects at first, because it looked like the stem wall had been breeched, or eaten through. But I haven't found any bugs. I will look again. Theses spots run lengthwise on the stem, are found near the V's, and are anywhere from 1/2" to 1 1/2" long. Some of the diseases on the list mentioned "necrosis," or the death of certain areas on stem or leaf, so this may be what the black spots are...? The leaves, though, are not necrotic, just deformed and distorted. Strange. Hopefully someone will have encountered something similar... Thanks again, veg

You are beyond awesome, texasflip!!! I've been using your list to do some research into these different types. You've saved me a year of wondering what to expect from each unknown species. I can now start developing an overall gardening plan for my property, and am better able to decide what to keep and what to replace. Since I bought the place, the largest Photinia turned completely brown and looks dead, so now I've figured out it might be fungus not drought. Better get me some antifungal stuff for it... I have a lot of Photinias, so I'm thrilled to find out they are a flowering shrub. I just read how big hackberries can get, and I don't want full size trees right up on my fence or under my soffits, where they are currently. Therefore, I'll be giving them the boot. It also makes me realize that even though it's so much taller, tree #5 is probably also a hackberry. Not enamored of the Nandina; I'll have enough red berries with the pyracantha, and no flowering to look forward to. I have them by my garage and around 2 bedroom windows. I'd prefer thorny things near the bedrooms, and taller things to draw attention away from my electric meter and circuit box. They look decent though, so as I find other things to put in my flowerbeds, I'll probably move the ones by the bedrooms to a rental property which could use some more shrubbery. The name "Box Elder" rang a bell; that is what the house inspector told me tree #4 is. If so-called shrub #9 is going to get the size of tree #4, I'll want to move or cut that out too.

I had the pleasure of trying a few from a friend....what a very odd plant and sensation that fruit gives you. Your head tells you that lemon is going to be sour but nope, sugar sweet:)

That's a really good growth... I'm still trying to find the secret to make it thrive besides the acidy soil there seem to be other factors to help it push new growth.
I remember how small it was when you got it.

I repotted last year and I remember that the roots where almost hair like so it was quite a job to get them to open up somewhat so more of the roots could have a fighting chance getting at the nutrients in the new soil.
I remember I only had a limited amount of peat soil on hand when I decided to move it to a larger pot. I had to improvise. I had a half of bag of soil that I told you about Bass and used that to fill in on top of the peat until the pot containing the plant was full. I also added just a (little) garden sulpher to the soil. I do fertilize with acid fertilizer and add a small amount of ironite as well every two weeks (1/2 strength).
I trying to learn if it's the normal way they develop or was it my unorthodox method of potting it up contributing to its growing so impressively.

Do you notice if the new leaves come up a bit purple like that one smaller leaf at the top in my photo? I think they do, just wanted confirmation
