Prune off side branch on 5/8' whip nectarine

I just planted a Zee Glo nectarine on Citation rootstock. Not a very large tree for $33, it is barely 5/8" at the graft.

It has a single side branch not even 12" from the ground. Clearly not a keeper long term. Should I cut it off now, or wait until next year on the theory that the small tree will benefit from the added foliage. Of course, it could just put a bunch of energy into that useless branch.

My goal, of course, is to get a nice straight 3-1/2 to 4" trunk before branching.
