Illinois everbearing mulberry tree in a container?

I have read that mulberry trees can grow huge really fast. I don't want the tree to take over my whole yard.

Can an Illinois everbearing mulberry be grown in a 25 gallon container?

Is there a better Mulberry for container growing?

Will a Mulberry produce fruit grown in a container?

Um, I can answer one and three, because I've "been there, done that"

Yes, it certainly can be grown long-term in a pot. I know because I used to have 2 mulberry trees in large pots (those storage tubs with the rope handles, actually), that I kept that way for 5 or 6 years until I got sick of heeling them in every winter (which won't be an issue in Zone 9!). I finally planted them in the ground.

Definitely, mine did. Realizing, of course, that the yield is going to be a function of the size of the tree, and the size of the tree is going to be a function of the size of the container. Larger is better in this instance, IMO.

Now, as far as your question about variety -- if you were here in Michigan, where choices are limited due to winter cold, I'd stick with I.E. But, in your climate, you probably have many more options, so hopefully someone else will help with that.

Bass, Thanks so much for the advice. THe tree is on my PA property. I ended up digging it out of the ground and potting it so that I could control the growing environment more until I can see if it will live. I wasn't aware until B.R. mentioned, that this was a grafted mulberry. I guess the problem with fall planting is that nothing is available for purchase after spring. I've checked to see who else carries them and in each case they were sold out by May. I'll see what I can do with this potted plant-chile, assuming it stays alive above the graft!

I read once that if you brush away the soil around the junction where the trunk meet the roots you will see a large root growing out along the surface of the soil. Chop through that root and it will stunt the tree and not make it so tall. You may need to root prune and summer prune and winter prune to keep it in line. Some of the places you see wild mulberries surviving - gravel, boulder filled rocky places with no water and no soil - I imagine you can keep one alive no matter what you do to it. All my mulberries are small (though fruiting) and all will be pruned heavily to keep them bush sized. Most of the plants in my yard require a lot of pruning so none of this bothers me.

I placed a large order with Hidden last fall and was very pleased with the prompt shipment and health of the plants, but they were quite small (but very reasonably priced). Excellent company. As to IE, I've planted a couple from Edible Landscaping both starting at 3 gallon size. First one did well a couple years back at a previous property. Then planted one here last fall, large plant that was incredibly root bound. Did my best to take care and spread the roots. Not sure why but it up and croaked, probably Easter freeze (which didn't harm the entire Hidden order). Anyway, had to have IE so purchased Stark Bros. tree from local nursery in the spring, they come in the "EZ" (narrow deep) pot. Probably started out at 4ft and 1 inch diameter. Now after terrible drought and only sheet mulch and soybean meal for nitrogen the beast is about 10Ft tall and 2 1/2 inch diameter even after being browsed hard by deer multiple times. Good luck. JB
