Hey Buck, I'm in SOuthern Cal, I grow IE, Oscar, Persian, Pakistan and have tried the white mulberry. I gotten all my mulberries at first from Burnt ridge. Now this is my take on them. They get their trees MOSTLY from some where else. I was not really impressed with there trees at all. BUT it was one of the only places I could get the type I wanted. I have since gone to LE cook but I buy in bulk meaning 30-40 trees at a time. Now I like the oscar the best for that type of mulberry. IE is good but for me oscar is better. Pakistan is a different type but I like them. But the best is the persian if you can grow it. That being said you are growing for wine so I would give a go at what ever works for you. I placed a large order with Hidden last fall and was very pleased with the prompt shipment and health of the plants, but they were quite small (but very reasonably priced). Excellent company. As to IE, I've planted a couple from Edible Landscaping both starting at 3 gallon size. First one did well a couple years back at a previous property. Then planted one here last fall, large plant that was incredibly root bound. Did my best to take care and spread the roots. Not sure why but it up and croaked, probably Easter freeze (which didn't harm the entire Hidden order). Anyway, had to have IE so purchased Stark Bros. tree from local nursery in the spring, they come in the "EZ" (narrow deep) pot. Probably started out at 4ft and 1 inch diameter. Now after terrible drought and only sheet mulch and soybean meal for nitrogen the beast is about 10Ft tall and 2 1/2 inch diameter even after being browsed hard by deer multiple times. Good luck. JB

All white mulberrys are invasive in north america. Red mulberrys are native. The Illinois Everbearing Mulberry is a Morus Alba (white mulberry) x Morus Rubra (red mulberry) hybrid. Morus Rubra (Red Mulberry) is native, why not just plant that one instead? It produces fruit as well, and you have no invasive issues, as it's native across most of the eastern US. Red mulberry (Morus Rubra) is increasingly rare because of all these hybrids being made/sold/bought/planted and not invasive. The fruit is very similar. If you want a fruiting tree for family and animals, the native red will do you the same benefits as the hybrid you're asking about. Keep in mind, mulberry trees attract wildlife, specifically, racoons. If your area has a rabies problem, planting mulberry trees is probably not a good idea, as they will flock to your property for the fruit.
