Thats a grape grafting method, that grafting crew probably mainly does grapes since they are somewhere on the west coast. I don't have problems with peach grafts breaking off but my persimmon bark grafts have been too fragile and I would be interested in trying that method on them to see if it makes a more stable graft. I've failed at most stonefruit grafting because I thought one could follow the rules for spring grafting, which works quite well for pomes -so because I had some success with pears and apples I thought the same pattern would work with apricots. But stone fruit require warmer temperatures to callous over well, and warmer temps happen in the summer. Scottsmith and others speak well to the exact temperatures where this happens well, but the short answer is "summer grafting", which means either budding or chip budding depending on your preference. The buds you would use in the summer haven't grown yet. The bud you use in spring grafting grew last summer. Hope this didn't muddy the waters for you.

I remove them and paint the scion with doc farwells or similar to keep it from drying out. Peach scions very commonly have flower buds on them. If you leave them the world probably won't end but you don't want the scion wasting energy feeding them. Scott

Cyndi: You're not providing us with much context to try to give you useful advice, and maybe that's why folks are not jumping on your post. Pretty much all peach trees are grafted, using various types of rootstock. The alternative would be a seedling peach, which might not faithfully reproduce the original variety, and would grow very large. So the question with respect to your peach tree is: Is the rootstock which is called "dwarfing" on the tree you are considering appropriate to your climate and the growing conditions you will provide? The truly dwarfing peach rootstocks, intended for trees which can be containerized, are much more cold sensitive than the rootstock types which may be called "semi-dwarfing", but will grow a larger, tougher tree. So please tell us the source of the tree you are considering, and whether the seller is able to provide reliable information on the rootstock type and its hardiness in your zone. There is no question that Reliance is one of the most hardy peach varieties so that takes care of the top part. It's the bottom part that is in question. It would also be important if you intend to try to grow such a tree in a container, which would make winter protection necessary in the Denver area. If you are buying from a local source, the nursery people should be able to give you the information you need to make an informed decision. If from a mailorder or online source, tell us which one, and how they describe the rootstock and its hardiness in your conditions. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA
