Has the 2yr old been in with other horses before? What kind of horses?
I would be very reluctant to put a weanling in with a recently gelded young horse in any case. Actually I wouldn't do it unless there was some emergency, only place they could be caught. Wouldn't leave them together any longer than it took me to be able to remove one of them.
My 3month weanling only is out with his dam and older, teenage, horses. They might nip him but would not chase or kick at him. The 6yr and under horses play VERY HARD, mock-fight, way too rough for a baby.
What kind of fences do you have around the paddocks? Babies damage themselves very easily, no brains to think with.
Do you have any friends you could borrow some horses from? An older mare, gelding, quiet, non-aggressive to put with weaned baby, AFTER it settles down from separation from mare. You will want to have a good, solid stall available the first couple days. Baby WILL act stupid with sudden weaning, most will try to go thru or over things locking her up.
Perhaps an older,larger, strong minded gelding, NO MARES, to put in with the 2yr old. Both friend and disciplinarian, teach the young horse herd manners.

Without X-rays you can't determine if mare's hooves have rotated inside with founder. Get some X-rays done to decide your next move. She should be diagnosed to have treatment needed for hooves, prevent further rotation of inner coffin bones. May not even be foundered, just sore.

If your mare has foundered, that is not what I would call a "mild scenario". Founder or laminitis is a Big Deal and if you donÂt get a rope around whatÂs going on you may end up with a mare that is not rideable or just plain dead.

Call the vet back about the mare and get a more precise diagnosis and a game plan for treatment and prevention of a recurrance of her laminitis/founder. Write down what the vet tells you and make sure you understand it.

If the horse has foundered, or has laminitis, what was the cause? Mechanical, metabolic, mare raided the feed bin?

Have you had a farrier out to look at her feet?

Did the vet perhaps administer steroids for the skin condition? That can trigger laminitis/founder.

Sounds like you have enough going on without having to listen to a mama and baby hollering back and forth all day long. Take care of the mare and worry about the baby when you have mama sorted out!

I wouldn't put that baby out with your newly gelded boy. One kick and you've lost the baby. She'll be out of her head screaming for momma and won't be thinking about anything that gelding would do to her. I agree with the others. Leave mom and baby together. The mare will push the filly off if she needs to. Take care of mom and let her take care of the baby. I believe we sometimes put too much human feelings into our animals. I don't think mom's condition can be worsened by something that is completely natural----her gently pushing her filly to wean by itself. Taking the baby away suddenly would definitely cause her enormous stress. She is hardwired to protect that baby and putting it in with a newly gelded horse will flip her lid.

Horses are weaned in the wild - in your situation, intervening could be disastrous.

And...what everyone else said -- founder is not "mild".

I agree to leave the baby with the mare at this time. Not only for the safety of the baby, but also for the safety of the mare--even if you think she is trying to wean the foal herself, I almost guarantee that if you take her baby away, she will run/pace the fence for a couple of days, especially if you don't have the facilities to get the baby out of earshot. That will cause further damage to her feet.

Keep an eye on the foal to make sure that it doesn't catch the skin disease, too. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets it (assuming it is contagious), since he's always nuzzling and nursing mama.

I don't know much about recently gelded stud colts, but I wonder what would happen if you put the 2 year old in with the mare and foal, to let him "meet" the foal. If the mare really is pregnant, she will wallop the 2YO if he tries to breed her. She should also protect her baby from him, and gradually once they get their pecking order established, she will let the foal associate with the 2YO more and more. This is just an idea, and like I said, I don't have any experience with something like this, as all our horses are grouped by age, and nobody gets gelded before they leave my care (T-bred breeding farm).

Is it possible that the skin condition is an allergic reaction to the medications...?
