Try calling the local animal shelter, or search online for ducks that need adopting? I'm sure someone near you has one.

Oh my goodness that is sooo sad, poor Mr. Flappers. Are you sure he won't be heeding the call of nature and flying away as well soon? If not, I hope you can find him a new duck buddy. Luck to you and MF.

Aww. I know you must miss him. My 2 babies are 10 weeks this Saturday and can fly a bit but have not taken off. I know it could be any day. I am trying to enjoy for now.

Ask and/or post notice at your local feed stores. They quite often know who has what for sale. Good luck.

Why not just go to the river and catch a baby one? That is the way we got all 4 of ours.

My mallard ducklings when they were ready to leave ,they would fly in circles around the farm every night.One night they just left.But the female comes back all year round.

The local Zoo usually get calls from people wanting to place ducks. You might try there.

You might try an animal rehabber, we have to find homes for ducks at least twice a year. Most vets have lists of local rehab people.

Thank you all for your idea's and for telling me that I did a good job with Mr. Flippers. I raised him with all of my heart and soul. I'm sure I'll find somebody who is a duck for Mr. Flappers to spend his time with.
Mr Flappers may be thinking he's a chicken now. He hangs out with them most of the time and always comes running to me along with them when I go outside to spend time with them. He's such a pretty, darling, duck.
I wish I'd known more about Blue Swedish ducks when I got him as a friend for Mr. Flippers. My husband and I are in love with him and we'd love to get another one next spring. I was under the impression that they are heavy bodied and don't fly. But yesterday Mr. Flappers caught air for a couple of seconds. I'm getting bird netting to go over the yard, unless someone else has a better idea for me. This is a domestic breed duck. You all probably know that better than I do though. :)
I keep wondering why Mr. Flippers didn't return after he'd flown off that day. There are so many fences here now. It must be confusing to them from the air. Or maybe a dog got him. The ducks fly over our house twice a day. It must have been too alluring for Mr. Flippers. He may have been a she. He/she was pulling feathers out of his/her breast area. Isn't that a female trait? Or is it a sign of stress...Or other....? I just don't know.
I have to admit to being a little tiny wee bit heartbroken that he's gone, even though I expected it, but not so soon and not with as much finality. Such a silly old woman. :/

There is nothing wrong with missing him, I'd wonder if you didn't :) I suspect he took off with a passing flock, it is that time of year. It's a testament to your raising that he was ready to go.

I too have felt very emotional over the loss of my ducks. I also have been in the position to see the sadness you describe in your duck missing it's mate. I had one mallard that I swore was dying of a broken heart when his domestic partner was shot by some jerk. I called around and was able to obtain a couple of mates for him. It wasn't long before he was eating and doing ducky things again. I have practiced having three or more ducks instead of just two . That way when something happens to one (there's always something) they still have the others. Ducks are highly social animals and do prefer thieir own kind but your Mr. Flappers will still get some comfort from your chickens. Good luck

I know exactly you feel! In May of 04 my Border Collie was having a fit over something in the grass under a huge mulberry tree in our yard. When we checked it was a tiny fluffy duckling/gosling. I couldn't resist....picked up and it immediately bonded with me. We raised the little thing....turned out to be a Canadian goose (female). We called her Goosagoose. When we walked to the mailbox (about 1/4 mile from the house) she would walk along with us just "honking" softly. We have a rental house here on the farm that we showed to several prospective renters and Goosagoose helped. Sometimes she would forget she wasn't an indoor goose and walk right into the house with us.
She found that she could fly last Fall and if she got too far behind when we went for walk she would simply fly to catch up. ar
She spent the winter with three little ducks that we bought last year in our yard. This Spring she seemed to be especia lly close whenever we went outside and walked carefully near us. Then, lo and behold, she laid an egg, and another, and another......three in one week. Each was placed near the patio so we found them immediately when we went outside in the morning. We were away most of the day one day and when we came home she was gone. Both my hubby and I were so sad and missed her so much. It was at a time when large flocks of Canadian geese were flying over.

Now whenever we see a group of them I watch them closely to see if one will come, honking quietly out of the group. I pray that our little girl is happily raising babies with a big, handsome gander of her very own.

Oh, Judy AG. Thank you for putting your experience with Goosagoose here for us all to read. I just love hearing about animals and birds and their people. I'm sure she is happy living the goose life somewhere. :)
We've seen a single lone mallard flying over the yard and house several times and Mr. Flappers makes all kinds of noise when this happens. It very well could be Mr. Flippers. But it's been a week or more since we saw this last. Now Mr. Flappers goes into the chicken house every night and sleeps in the dark space under the nest boxes. During the day he is the constant companion of my bottom of the pecking order Barred Rock. She's been broody over her nest full of infertile eggs and he stays right beside her. I go and get her off the nest and remove the eggs before they turn into egg bombs and pretty soon she's right back at it again. They eat together and drink together. He seems sort of puzzled when she doesn't get into the water with him though. He spashes like crazy and makes all kinds of noise and she scoots away from the water until he's finished and gives up trying to get her in there with him.
I contacted someone from 4-H who said he could probably find a duck or two for me, but he hasn't called back yet. I'll call him again this week.
I tried the humane society and they said that 3 ducks were brought in in March and that they'd taken them to their ranch in the mountains and that they'd just "disapeared". I was so mad at them I could have spit! I asked them if these were DOMESTIC ducks and they said that they were. I suppose I could have raised the issue of coyotes and bobcats, mountain lions, hawks and eagles... What would be the point though.
We'll have a friend for Mr. Flappers soon, I'm sure and hopefully more than one.
