Yes today is the day 8:32pm april 30 is when he arrived. He seemed to care less that I sat here not 2ft away at my pc as he dunked his beak 20-25 times. I do believe he was thirsty. Then he flew over to a nearby elmtree and thats how I knew he was not finished and then he came back for another 15 dunks then away he flew.

I thought that Monday or Tuesday might be auspicious for me, but it turned out to be auspicious for you, Steve. Congratulations!

I shouldn't be surprised, though, because you're in the path of that same weather system that is bringing winds up the Mississippi and Ohio valleys, through Indiana, and into western Pennsylvania. It makes sense that they got to you first. I'm hoping my birds are moving along with that same system, and maybe someone will show up tomorrow or Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the winds are predicted to change again and I think conditions won't be as favorable for mass movements. I suspect if I don't see one tomorrow, or Wednesday, I'll have to wait for the next cycle of weather to see my first.

Last year it was May 2nd, and now that "firsts" are popping up everywhere, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be soon.

I am glad for you hummersteve. I know you have been patiently waiting. Now your Happy Hummer season has arrived! :) Kristin, I'm hoping that the weather conditions will bring your hummers in real soon and bring you lots of joy!! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!

ilovemyroses - some frown upon home brews, but I don't like spraying real chemicals... so a friend gave me this recipe and it has worked for me for 5 years now. In a spray bottle (like an old windex bottle that has been completely cleaned out) I put a few drops of liquid dish soap, and about a teaspoon of white vinegar and fill it up with water. When the sun is not shining on the roses I spray where needed, especially under the leaves where aphids hide. I can say since I started doing this i have never had a blackspot outbreak, although there has been a leaf here and there that is affected. My unscientific theory is that the vinegar does something to the ph of the leaf helping reduce blackspot and kill powdery mildew. the dish soap kills aphids by drying out their skin (or whatever it is). I do this when the sun is not shining on the bushes because in the past the sun plus the spray can cause new growth to burn. All in all this works for me, but may not for others. I don't like chemicals, as I don't want to harm bees, birds etc that may come to the roses. Unfortunately this doesn't do anything for June Bugs (Japanese Beatles). I am a cheapo, so I actually use water and vinegar mixture as a general cleaner around the house as well (with no dish soap). I started using this mixture on my roses after one summer where nearly every rose of mine lost its leaves to blackspot. My neighbor suggested I start doing it. I get a small thrill out of spraying the leaves and then looking at them the next day and seeing all the aphids turned black. :)

And any sign of buds? Yes!!!!!! This is a first for me, seed sown 29th December so not quite 6 months old. Its that Miracle x 45 cross again (red x red). I'd better not crow too loudly in case the plants are too small to carry the flowers to completion and they shrivel and fall off. Still buds are buds. I got as close to the plant as possible with my phone.

i've never written about james robin and i've been knowing him for about six years. i personally like him and for those who don't know him, he is an icon of a dying breed of man who owns a small nursery in the boonies of opelousas louisiana. james was very upset a few years back when rkn popped up in some of his fig trees. he works very hard in the propagation of his trees and getting to the origin of the rkn and stopping it was high on his priorties. i recall going to his place one day seeing about five trees put in a pile as he explained and showed me what rkn was. that was the first time i actually saw what rkn looked like. he took the rkn issue very seriously and talked about the ways he would remedy it. if you get the chance to visit jr you should take it because he is no spring chicken and tending to his ill wife betty on a pretty much full time basis has him really booked up. i gotta admire him for his loyality to his wife who needs 24\7 attention. he enjoys company and isn't shy about giving opinions on figs or any fruit. like i said, he is an icon particulary in the fig world with his mom and pop nusery in the boonies. i still depend on my gps to get me to his place. go when you can spend some time. fernando

Don't you just hate it when ppl advance your thread and offer absolutely NO help? Looks like you have a touch of early blight and possibly a deficiency. You can treat the blight with a fungicide like Serenade or Daconil. Some just keep the infected leaves cut off the plant so it won't spread as fast and let it run it's course. What are you using for fertilizer?

Thanks guys for your kind words. Kristin Im sure you will have your day in the sun very soon, Im really not surprised I got a visitor for it has been in the mid 80s here the last three days in row. Although wed or thurs it is supposed to cool down in the 60s here. Im wondering though if the hummer that stopped here is just on his Kristins house and I may have to wait for the next wave for that was the only visitor I had. Kristin keep your eyes open.
