It seems everyone's rudeness sensitivity has a different adjustment. If you want to see rude, flip on over to the Soils forum or the Organic Gardening forum where it is too common to gang up on one member and flat out call him stupid in so many words. On the corn gluten meal thread which ZS started a week or so ago, he said I had accused him of something but he would ignore it because he wanted to remain positive. I put the following into a message. Can anyone help me see where I might have made an accusation and one that had a negative note to it? It seems to me that ZS is egging us on by posting quotes that fly in the face of what has become common knowledge. When we try to explain either what is wrong with the quote or where the quote left off vital information or where the source quote was taken out of context, then the tone of the messages changes for the worse. To me it is clear who threw the first punch on this thread. Tiemco asked some questions and ZS bit his head off. I offered some clarification and got my head bit off. ZS if you prefer to read books and do not like to read what we have to say in this forum, then why are you here? I'm not saying there is no reason to be here, I'm simply asking why you are here? Are you here to offer us the benefit of what you have read? If that is the case then we will respond completely differently. Most people come here to find out if what they have read holds water. We have made that assumption with you. If we have been giving you advice when you were not looking for it, then that might be the root of the antagonism. Giving unwanted advice is considered rude to a lot of folks. Please let us know. You can establish your credentials based on what you read outside the forums and we'll leave it alone. I might add that disagreeable messages are one reason that forums lose membership. I've seen some really great people leave this forum simply because of one or two members who pestered them mercilessly. If you would not like to receive our thoughts and comments on your threads, it is easy enough to make that happen. Since I seem to be a catalyst for you, ZS, and since I don't see where my remarks are setting you off, then I'll stop replying with these thoughts and let you go.

Theresa, Garlic Mustard: The key to garlic mustard is to never let them go to seed. Hand-pulling and RoundUp where it grows thick and rampant works, but you have to get on it early. If it does go to seed, the best thing I can tell you is pick it and bag it right there in the spot. Remember that spot and watch it like a hawk the next year and the year after. Never carry a wad of loose garlic mustard across the yard to toss it in a weed pile. You'll sow seed everywhere you walk. I forget the stats, but there is an INSANE number of seeds off 1 plant...and they are TINY. They will easily burrow anywhere. If it's growing in the lawn, that's okay. Mowing keeps it cut off and the plant will naturally die either that same year or the next year. If I recall correctly, an individual plant lives 2 years before it dies naturally. I know garlic mustard is a hard one, but I've had success. When I moved in, I had it everywhere. Now, I hardly have any, but I do watch and maintain very carefully. Buckthorn: I've found the buckthorn have shallow roots, so they are really easy to hand-pull...even saplings a couple feet tall. The spread of buckthorn happens when the seed/fruit drops. Those seeds germinate and sprout extremely easy. I am obsessive around August-September when the fruit starts to drop. They are like small plums. When they drop, they are still hard and can be raked up. If the fruit is left on the ground, it will soften and break open in about a week and there are the seeds. The seeds look like cocoa bean mulch, and there can be so many of them that they WILL form a mulch layer if you have as many as I did...and still do. I rake like a maniac at least once a week until it's all over. Last year I carried out 1-2 five-gallon buckets of buckthorn fruit per week. (I have an entire vacant lot I'm clearing, not just this corner). This year, I hardly have any new seeds or sprouts in areas I cleared. I haven't had any trouble with buckthorn in my grass despite the bazillion mushy ickies getting stepped on. For the cleared area: I am considering a water feature (fountain...not pond) in that spot. I can easily run electricity thru my garage for the pump. I'm considering a brick/stone circle in the center with seating & plants surrounding it. I'm considering a circle path to walk the perimeter and plants on edges & in the center. My rainbarrel and compost piles are right there, so I want to do something to camouflage and divert attention elsewhere. I'll likely take out the cinder block dividers for the compost piles and do something prettier. I have a lot of considerations, don't I? So many options. I've been tossing ideas around for a year & now that I'm getting close, I still don't have a game plan aside from lots of hostas. Gayle

hello well I hope the rest make it home by the end of the week. you know drippy I guess it is just a gift I have, I print/write a list of what people are looking for and just try to pop as many of their fav/wanted seeds in the envie, or things like it. but after the first 10 or 12 envies come in I get a little lost in the lists and just start looking and saying I think they will go ....here, maybe not a gift so much as dumb luck. LOL we are doing better my mother in law said she wanted us to have her new standard poodle puppy, she is a dream and the boys love going over to the house and playing with her. her name is pearl but I think I'm gonna rename her Ruby(Miss Ruby Star) or shasta (Miss Shasta Daisy). my oldest, Timmy is very excited to have her. she is 4 months old and very active, my mother in law just can't keep up with her, she and the boys will do a great job of running each other out. Hi, folks! My opinion on a typical pack of seeds would be 20-25, and fewer for large, rare or expensive seeds. Many times tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds are more like 12-15 seeds. Counting out poppy or foxglove seeds is a pain, but a tiny pinch is about 40-50, so I do that. Some people measure out 1/8 teaspoons or 1/4 teaspoons of tiny seeds. I don't have a 1/8t spoon, and 1/4t is a large proportion of my seeds. If you're agonizing over whether or not to send in just a few of a seed, you can always ask the recipient, or you can use the gardenweb list search. Search for people who also have that seed, and read the list for people in this swap. If a couple of us have it, you don't need to worry about dividing up your small supply. You find the Search Lists function by clicking at the bottom of the page on Member Pages, and then choose Search Members' Exchange Lists. That is also a way to figure out who to send to, by searching for people looking for a seed you have. However, sometimes someone will type "No datura, please" but the computer just sees that "datura" is in the wants area. So this search can get you started, but you should still personally check. :) GARLIC: I'd love to try some different hardnecks! Cloves or even bulbils. Cloves are big--should we plan to send somewhat roomy envelopes and extra postage money to pay for getting the cloves to us? I grow two hardneck types and can offer bulbils, unfortunately I don't know the names. On seems to be a porcelain, one a rocambole. (One has a ton of tiny bulbils, one has larger bulbils, so please correct me if you think I'm wrong). You plant the bulbils at the same time as big garlic, and then dig it up the next year when it yellows the right amount. Then you replant it in fall, unless you want to eat the baby garlic. In my reading, it seems pretty definite that if you leave garlic in the ground without digging and replanting, it just splits into smaller bulbs and is less and less what you intended when you planted it.
