Snow Peas Done for the Season?

Thanks everyone for the advice on my delicious snap peas...I've eaten handfuls every day for some time now, but now there are no more pods, and no more blossoms, does that mean it's done for the season?

If it's done for the seasoon, should I uproot them? I've got maters, swiss chard, lettuce and strawberries growing alongside the pea vines, and I don't know if uprooting the peas will give more light to the rest of my garden, or will instead disrupt the soil and harm the other plants.

Yes, they're probably done. I would cut them off at the soil surface and compost the vines. That way you'll leave nutrients in the soil, but the non-productive plants won't continue to use soil nutrients and block sun from your other plants. If you have any peas left at all, you can leave a few vines to mature to save seed from for next year.

"studies of pea germination on the internet indicates that you can plant as early as you like but the pea seeds are not going to germinate until the soil temdperature hit about 50 degrees F" sconticut Not correct. I planted my peas (snow and snap) in ealy February. I am in zone 7/8 GA. In Feb and Mar. we never had that kind of soil temperature(50F). In fact, it was cold and even snowed. But my peas germinated in February and started growing. Now they are about 3 ft. tall. Probablay about this time our soil temperatur is about 50F, that almost every seed can grow. Peas are cold hardy and even their seeds germinate in cold weather. Of course,having consisten lows of 20s will be too cold for them to germinate. But if they get a chance of highs in 50s for a while then they will germinate.

Blue Podded Peas and Yellow Snow Peas

There are several cultivars of blue podded English peas and I am not sure which one Baker creek is offering. They have been around since Noah got off the Ark, but not immensely popular. Blauwschokkers ( sometimes sold as Blue Pod) is a climbing pea. Large vine with pink flowers. Blue Pod Capucijners is a smooth seed pea used primarily dried in split pea soup. Blue Pod Desiree is a bush type whose pods are more purple than blue. No experience with Golden Sweet, supposedly came from India as opposed to most snow peas which came from China. Climbing pea with 6 foot vines. other than that I am in the dark. If you like to experiment with novelties, well worth trying.

Hi there... I am seeking a variety of pea that i trialed this past season. I beleive it's name is Chinese Snow Pea. I really loved this variety and would love to find more seeds for it to add to what i saved. I would love to make a much bigger planting of these come April/May. Snow peas for early cover crop?

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll just try it out and see. The main reason for planting was to cover crop them, I was just hoping for a bonus pea harvest out of it. I wasn't going to wait till late march though, I was going to plant this weekend. Also my Zone 5 is a warm zone 5. I'm in a nice protected valley, we are on average 10 degrees warmer than on the hilltops around here, which I would consider a true zone 5. I'm using avalance snow peas which say 59 days to harvest. So maybe I'll get at least something out of them.

Funny to see a thread about snow peas being done. After 8 weeks, mine finally put out flowers this weekend!

Wow, Bomber, where do you live...in the high country like Leadville or up in the UP?!

Here in Southern Oregon it's been rainy and in the 70's, kinda weird for June.

Mine are just about ready for the first pickin's here in central Ohio. I have 2 succession plantings after that.

My sugar snap peas are finishing up now. I plan to plant a fall crop also...do't think I could get 3 plantings as the first was planted on March 17th.

Are we talking snow or sugar snap? Probably doesn't matter. Mine are about wrapping up as well. Will probably be well above 80 degrees after this week. I haven't pulled them yet. They are growing up my tomato cages, but the latest ones are very short and kind of distorted. Sigh. I hope I can get it together for a fall crop.

They're Oregon Sugar Snap Peas. My last few have been short and distorted, too.

Ed, I'm in south central Massachusetts, and it's been cloudy, rainy, and cool here all spring for the most part. In fact, today's temperature is only supposed to be 57Â° (normal high is 74Â°) Ugh............

Mine in Wisconsin have been producing for a couple weeks now. The garden ones started a few days ago and the container ones 2 weeks ago. The lousy (for warm season plants) weather has been great for them. I don't see them lasting very long once/if this cool weather transitions into a proper summer.

I was late, late getting peas planted this Spring. One of my recent disappointments was how long it took to get the "tractor guy" in to till the big veggie garden. Only now are the 5 beds of the 4 edible varieties above ground.

Snow, snap, shell . . . and more snow. (And then there's the sweet peas at the other end of things. I've got lots of trellis building ahead of me. ;o) Then the end of July will come -- and I'll plant more snow peas . . .

I thought our snow peas were almost done about a week ago when we had a few days around 90 degrees. The ones we were picking were getting smaller with bigger seeds already.

After more moderate weather returned, it seems they're producing well again and my wife even picked more than usual on Tuesday (along with our first tomato!).

I guess I can't pull them up until I see they aren't producing new flowers anymore.
