Has the soil been wet? If so they may have rotted. Has the soil frozen solid to the depth of the presoaked seeds? If so they may have frozen and encountered cellular death (the water makes them 'splode).

Unfortunately there really is no way to say for sure if they are OK. I have had snow peas take a month to germinate in cold soil.

I always put seeds out early (sometimes presoaked in an attempt to speed up germination, sometime prespouted and then transplanted). More often than not the first batch to go outside don't make it due to heavy rains followed by sub freezing weather/snow etc.

So, I replant.

Often, around the time the replanted seeds germinate I get some of the previous planting I assumed dead also germinating.

I would rather replant and thin later if necessary than delay replanting as my season for snow peas isn't all that long. Winter holds on forever and then the heat of summer comes along.

So, that's my take or 2 cents worth.

My peas were planted 2 weeks ago unsoaked. No sprouts yet. Im not concerned. Its still pretty cold out at night. The sun is shining today and in the upper 60s. :) They will come up when they are ready. You might lose a few to rot, but replant a few seeds in the bare spots after the others have come up.

You could dig up a few and check for rot or predation by little critters. I try to remember to plant a few peas off to the side just for this purpose.
I also sprout them indoors for two or three days ahead of anticipated 50+ degree weather. Putting them out in 45- weather is pointless. They either don't grow or grow ridiculously slowly. The longer they sit there, the more likely they are to rot or be eaten.

I wait until I get sprouts. Last year for snow peas I even grew 2 inch seedlings which worked well. It was work but I was only doing 3 square feet of them but since they were big 7 foot vines they were plenty productive. I have had beans and limas rot in the ground and I don't much care for that. I will be sprouting every lima this year.

My perusal of various scientific studies of pea germination on the internet indicates that you can plant as early as you like but the pea seeds are not going to germinate until the soil temdperature hits about 50 degrees F. You can soak them, stroke them or talk pretty to them but they are just going to sit in the dirt until the warmup comes. Here in zone 6B, SE MA, that's usually about the third week in April. Mine grew fine last year. Rabbits loved every last one of them after they grew four inches.

I planted the same day as you, after soaking (and talking pretty) and I just started to see sprouts last week. Many more sprouts now.

My snow and sweet peas took over a month to sprout. My sweet peas were even longer. Seed packets always say to plant as soon as soil can be worked, but then when temps plummet back in to the 20's & 30's... Seeing those sprouts after that long is a BIG relief.

Im right there with you guys, I planted about the same day you all did, and they just started sprouting 3 days ago! I was nervous too, even dug up one or two, and saw they were growing so I crossed my fingers and left them alone. I also planted lettuce by seed and hadnt seen anything, and noticed the lettuce seed today growing. Massachusetts is getting some good weather this weekend, so that will help a lot of our gardens!!!

Just a note of caution. The sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is poisonous. I think you all are talking about English peas sometimes called garden peas by the younger generation ( Pisum sativum). Sometimes beginners are tempted to eat sweet peas when confused by the common name.

Not correct. I planted my peas (snow and snap) in ealy February. I am in zone 7/8 GA. In Feb and Mar. we never had that kind of soil temperature(50F). In fact, it was cold and even snowed. But my peas germinated in February and started growing. Now they are about 3 ft. tall. Probablay about this time our soil temperatur is about 50F, that almost every seed can grow. Peas are cold hardy and even their seeds germinate in cold weather. Of course,having consisten lows of 20s will be too cold for them to germinate. But if they get a chance of highs in 50s for a while then they will germinate.

One of mine is poking through the soil as of 8am this morning. All the rain we had Tuesday and Wednesday this week combined w. the above average temperatures this weekend should have them all up by Monday

I planted my peas about the same time, however I pre-sprouted and have hoop covers on my raised beds and my peas are still only 3 inches tall. Weather flucuations a huge factor, but they are coming around now.

AHHH - if peas are a hit with the kids this year, I'll be planting in Feb next year!!

I'm growing a dwarf variety this year, Sugar Ann. Planted on Feb 18, I have started picking this week. As with all the other sugar snaps I have grown, the blooms have all been white. But this morning I have one plant with purple blooms. Anyone else have colored blooms?

Those are gorgeous, pls8xx! I have seen some varieties w. pink flowers before, and the first time I saw them, I thought there was something wrong. What's even more interesting is that the flowers start white, as indicated in your picture as well. Are those staked at all?

Does anyone know if it's ok to plant snow and sweet peas togehter, to grow up the same trellace? I read on one website not to plant sweet peas in the same place as other legumes. Has anyone tried this before? Thanks.
