pollinating a paw-paw
Comments (28)Over the past several weeks, my sunflower paw-paw had 15-20 flowers and I used my brush to extract yellow pollen from the older (black looking w/ leaves falling off) flowers and paint on to the younger just-opening flowers. The several fruit that looked promising last year were eaten by rodents so I'll have to do a better job of caging the fruit that I hope will grow this year. Wild Haired Mavens, I wish you luck w/ your LA paw paw. They don't do well in direct sun light (I lost 4 last year because my canopy fell off while I was away) and regardless of the species (hopefully sunflower), make sure to hand-pollinate when the flower open to get the best chance of fruits. In the meantime, paw-paws are related to cherimoya (similar taste from what I've read), which I would recommend purchasing if you can find it. They're my personal favorite fruit and can be bought from Home Depot (make sure you buy two to cross pollinate)....See MoreTime for some strange fruit hanging from the Paw Paws
Comments (3)Corwin Davis came up with the idea after watching what came to visit his blooming pawpaws one evening and finding it to be carrion flies. Might be a good opportunity to recycle dead squirrels and so allow them to contribute to the fruitfulness of the orchard and pay their keep....See MorePaw paw pollination, did I accidentally help by being lazy?
Comments (10)Here they are. A size reference. I don't know how the Coors can ended up in the pic!Small volunteers from fruit I missed, or where the deer and I ate some? Hard to see the fruit, plus the deer got about 20 from the lower branches Sunday. The one to the right gets the most sun and it is the smallest. But it had more fruit. I picked 10 more that were ready. I have maybe 25 that are not quiet ripe. They may be ripe today. I took the flesh out and froze it for later. Only 2 of us to eat them fresh. My wife, that was born in Colombia SA likes them. She said they taste like Guava, a popular fruit there....See MorePaw paw tree in western Chicago burbs that needs pollination
Comments (12)That is a gorgeous tree. I hope someone from your area responds. As a side note, I used gibberellin on my female hardy kiwi last year with great success. Because my male hardy kiwi didn't flower yet. Gibberellin is used to simulate fruit "pregnancy" in seedless watermelons and seedless grapes, for example. Just an idea....See Moreharbin_gw
