had to transplant garden...problem!

Hello, I have two raised boxes. One has 10 tomato plants, the other has 9 sweet banana peppers, parsley and small cucumbers.

I planted the garden in March. It was all new at that time. My husband and I separated and I did not know it was going to be temporary. Circumstances changed and this weekend I ended up moving back home. Everything is fully grown and picking new stuff every day. He had to transplant the garden. It was a spur of the moment, no time to plan kind of thing....I had no time to research how to do this. He brought everything home and replanted everything. I didnt watch bc I was upset everything was probably going to die. This was Saturday....this morning everything is still looking pretty limp. My tomato plants are all hung over and wilted. The peppers are looking good. The cucumbers are not looking good. Are they just in shock or are they done for?

This is the best season I have ever had and I am so sad to see my hard work go down.

Any suggestions are really appreciated.

Transplanting is always hard on plants especially at this time of year. The biggest problem is the sun and "transplant shock". The best thing you can do for them now is to provide them with a lot of shade. When I was little my mom taught me to make hats for the transplants. Take a paper bag, cut a couple of inches at each corner to make flaps, then put the bag over the plant using the flaps and some stones to weigh the bag down. It provides shade while still allowing air circulation. I take their "hats" off in the evening and put them back on in the morning when the sun hits them. You need to do this for at least three days to allow the roots time to get settled. Of course you will be keeping the ground plenty moist at the same time. When I have planted plants too large for a paper bag I have actually used umbrellas. however you can manage it, shade those babies for at least three days.

Agree with sunnibel7 re: spring crops will do better in lower light gardens, but it won't hurt to try & see what grows to harvest for you this year. Our vegetable garden borders our gravel driveway as we live in a clearing in the woods & that's our best chance of sunshine. Spring crops always do better than our fall because of that lowering sun height reducing our sunlight significantly. If we get our fall crops growing by mid-summer and by October they're nearly mature we can hold them in the garden to harvest through most of the winter as long as the weather is mild & on coldest days we throw over some row cover fabric. The lower leaves of our broccoli, cabbages, & kale are yellowing & have spots, but doesn't seem to affect what we harvest up above. There are still insects roaming around the gardens as well as those baby slugs finding their way, so as long as the plants are still growing or providing a harvest I don't worry about a little bit of damage. We can keep root crops in the ground as long as we mulch before freezing weather comes. Ideally, a hoop structure over each bed would keep off the excessive winter rain, but I don't have one built yet. I understand your frustration with the partly shaded garden space. Just today we harvested the rest of our tomatoes & though the plants were healthy & vigorous we just don't have the volume of harvest as compared to other gardens we visit with full sun. You can still can grow food, but it's just a smaller harvest no matter what you do to the soil! If you can't take down the trees, you just grow what you can and make the most of it planting what you like to eat & see growing.

They "might" be ok. ;>) M. capillaris is a warm season grass, which will start entering dormancy when the frosts get to you. If they get their roots reestablished before that, they'll be fine, particularly if you took good-sized rootballs. Look at it this way; they have a better chance of surviving cold weather than surviving a stump grinder.

Bob, If the garden is fenced, and it has a gate, lock the gate. If it isn't fenced, there isn't much you can do. You can put up 'No Trespassing' signs, and I don't believe you can press charges for trespassing in the state of Oklahoma unless you have the property posted properly and in accordance with the manner outlined in the trespassing law. Check with your local city code enforcement officer or county sherriff's office to find out how to post your no trespassing signs. You could put up a game camera (like hunters use) and catch the person in the act on film. Then, it is your choice whether you confront that person directly face to face, if it is a local resident you recognize, or you turn over the photo to the police with whom you've filed a theft report. You could files charge for misdemeanor theft (only for the dollar cost of the melons stolen) if you catch the person in the act, but only for the melon or melons he or they have in their possession at the time you catch them. You can only assume they took the earlier melons, but you have no proof (with the earlier melons) that will hold up in a court of law. If you live in town, you can file a report with the police and ask for extra patrols, but they may or may not be able to accomodate your request depending on their staffing levels. You could put up a Scarecrow sprinkler, or a security light with a motion detector and a siren (I would!), or both. You could put up a few stakes and some fishing line threaded back and forth in a random pattern a foot or so above the ground and hope they get tangled up in it and either you or someone else find them/see them. I assume you have a job and a life and cannot sit in the garden all night with a gun to protect it, so you have to either fence it, rig it with something like the Scarecrow motion-activated sprinkler, etc. I'd be most unhappy if someone were stealing from my garden. It is very frustrating to spend the time, money and effort only to have your harvest stolen....especially when the harvest is limited, since melon vines don't produce fruit endlessly like indeterminate tomatoes do. In the 'old days' 10 or 15 years ago, I probably would have shrugged off the thefts and said, "Oh, well, whoever it is probably is poor and hungry and needs the food worse than we do". But, truthfully now, there are just a lot of lazy, shiftless people who will steal you blind if you let them and it generally isn't because they are poor and hungry....it IS often because they are on drugs and don't hold down a job. (My husband is a cop so I know from the cases he works that people will steal ANY thing and EVERY thing they can nowadays and they don't care what it is or what it means to the person from whom they are taking it.) If you are in a rural area where there is not a lot of traffic, you need a fence. Our fence's topmost section is lightweight and 'floppy' (because it is loosely attached) so no one can climb over it, etc. You have to do what you can to protect your garden. I'm not sure what the ultimate answer is, but as long as there is a way people can get into your garden, they're likely to do so. My garden is in front of the house....between the house which sits 300 feet back from the roadway and the road itself, so theft is always possible, but it doesn't happen often. The fact that this keeps happening over and over again makes me think it could become an ongoing issue. Now melons, and then later on, after the melons are gone....then what? You have my sympathy. Neves - Poor Germination - Gardener Problem??

I got 25% (3/12) germination from my NAR seeds. The 3 that came up took about 2 weeks. They are also the weakest plants I have. 2 are the same as described by roper2008, stem with stuck seed coat. I softened up the seed coat and it slipped off. Those 2 are still pretty sickly looking. The third one has nice large cotyledon and a strong stem, but just the smallest buds of the first true leaves. I purchased mine from Diane's Seeds. I bought 5 varieties (plus 1 freebie). All the other varieties had 85%-100% germination. All others came up in less than 5 days expect Earl's Faux which was a slow poke at 10 days. I traded some of my seeds with my Dad who got his seeds from Harris Seeds. His were hybrids which came up in about 5 days with 90% germination. He hasn't planted any of my seeds yet. I germinated in a Jiffy greenhouse using Jiffy pellets at 75 degrees. I planted the remaining 7 of my NAR seeds a week ago. Nothing yet. Todd (long time lurker, first time poster)

Depending on how large the tomatoe were, they should spring back. You may have a reduced crop though.

The peppers will probably be fine unless they were loaded, in that case you may loose some fruit due to stress.

The cukes...well they don't like to be transplanted when small, so I could not imagine transplanting a full grown plant that is producing. I would have to keep your fingers crossed on this one. But wouldn't count on them.

Why did you transplant them anyway? Why couldn't you just leave them where they were and commute to your garden for the summer? My garden in 40 minutes from home and I am there every or every other day. Kind of a pain, but since I have no sun at home its the only way to get veggies.

They are in a full sun back yard...and they are ALL full grown.....which is why Im thinking the cucs arent going to survive. Ya never know.
I could not let them stay at the house I was living at bc of a personal situation. I had to leave and really need to not communicate with that person for the time being.
The tomatoes were all full grown plants, everything is still on them, just the plants are sagging really sadly.
We'll see!!!

I say when if their wilting in the sun Mist them with water.
Plants transpire water, specially with the sun beating on them. If you disturbed their roots it seems logical to me that they may not beable to meet their water intake demands. Hence the wilting. Plants though can absorb water threw their leafs. But it demands how far gone the wilting is. After a certain point the leafs will be dead and no amount of water will save them.

In zone 7 you have lots of gardening time left so if you see that they are not going to make it..get hot and do some more. We have all experienced bad happenings in our gardens so you just have to get up, dust yourself off, and keep on going.

I've been watering it in the morning and in the evening once the sun is out of the back yard. A few of the leaves of the cucs are looking better but its still not looking lively at all. The tomatoes....some of the leaves are getting crunchy, dead dead.....
I'll just keep watering and see what happens.
Its in the 90's here every day already so as far as tomatoes, I do not have any time to start new. The first few years i did gardens, I started a little later than this year and last year and stuff was dieing once it was getting too hot, regardless of how much I watered it.

Thanks for the update. I was going to post this morning and ask how they were doing. Sending lots of growing vibes your way. I applaud you for trying to move them. I have walked away from too many gardens in my life and its always hard.

we just moved from our apartment on april 20th. I had a square foot garden on the balcony, I had califlower, brocolli, cabbage (blue) rutabagas, chard and peas. Had to pull them up when we moved :( and another week or 2 would have been producing, it is heartbreaking, I feel for you
